Linux?

I just wondered how many *nix users were on BM and if there was an existing/active forum that I could check out. I tried some searches myself and got similar results.

I used to be a Unix consultant on mainly AIX, Solaris & HP-UX based systems. I started using Linux for my own computers in the late 80's/early 90's, Red Hat, SuSE & others. Eventually settled on Mint but decided to change when they stopped supporting QT. After trying a fair few distros I have been using KDE (neon & plasma) for the last few years. Works for me ;)
Always preferred Africa

Well in!
Done a few dual/multi-boots using DOH!s 11/neon. Generally piss easy. The only problem seems to be with Calamares installer (QT based so probably not used by Mint) when trying to install the linux system over multiple drives.

It's getting a bit more problematic now what with the safeboot settings on modern operating systems and the what appears to be more expensive motherboards locking users out of some controls.

I made the schoolboy error of installing windows 10 in legacy mode so after converting the OS disk to UEFI and installing windows 11 the dual boot installation went a lot smoother.

The whole reason for me is that I find that VM's are OK to tinker with but no matter what I do they always seem laggy, maybe it's because of the GPU passthrough not fully working but either way the end result is a bit crappy.

You're definitely right. As you alluded to, I would also include the increasing difficulty of accessing bios info and the lack of ability to change it's settings.
Could it be that certain companies, with huge, even global, tentacles could be still, despite being fined, colluding to control the market?
Good job this doesn't happen in football!

Nearly made same error meself, many times, no worries.

Agree that using VMs can be a bit shit. I use Oracle VirtualBox. I think that the problems seem to come from lack of main memory rather than the graphic board.

One of the greatest goals of all time?

Linux Mint Cinnamon is exactly what I needed after WIndows 7 was no longer supported.

All my office, productivity and games just work. Linux has come a LONG way and if you can use a USB stick and a mouse and keyboard, you can use it.

It just works and is not slow! That's all I need and it's free.

Yes and no. Let me caveat this by saying that in my opinion, most Linux based distros absolutely blow away Windows now and they have done for many years. I don't dual boot, I just run Arch or Kubuntu.

The problem is that the whole desktop world runs on Windows so people are taught to troubleshoot using their logic. Linux is great for newcomers until it doesn't just work then it can be incredibly frustrating

I can honestly say the only thing I've had to troubleshoot in 4 years of using Linux Mint was a wifi not working but it turned out to be the wifi adapter died. Bought a new one, plug and play.. didn't even have to install drivers.

And I've yet to have a single BSOD or freeze.. it just works!

Not bad for a 12 year old machine that's running i5 3770k, 16gb DDR-3 Ram and 1080Ti video card (upgraded from 660).

Edit: I think Debian based linux is just stable.. a lot more than Arch. Ubuntu has a few quirks but Mint always releases their stuff after about 2 months as they really prioritize stability. Maybe that's why I've been happy with it. /shrug
