You are right of course but according to this report when they played them last season they also took around 50 fans. You get expenses rather than wages, that is how it worked. There were 4 divisions under the Conference: NPL NPL1 NWC1 NWC2 (later 80s) and most players got something.

I'd bet a fair proportion of those going away were fans before the current owners turned up. Or are rags local to the home side.
