Living in the UK advice.

A good mate of mine here in Oz, originally from Leicester, has decided he is homesick after 20 years of living here in Australia. He misses things like the humour and nice country pubs
He is planning to come back to live in the UK and is slowly starting to sell his belongings and preparing for the move in March....but then he told me about this video he had watched on YouTube about life in the UK presently.
He is now worried that things aren't as rosy as he is thinking and is seemingly unsure. His wife is Australian and excited about the castle's and history etc.

What I want to ask is, is this guy talking bollocks or his he being factual? I haven't lived in the UK for over 30 years so I don't really know whether he is bullshiting or not and creating a video that a lot of people will watch so he can make money on it.

I told him I would post it on here to get some fair reactions.

He's a moaning fucker isn't he? There isn't a single thing he likes much other than the grass and bushes. All I got from his diatribe is that he should stay away.

If you live in a city with graffiti and scruffy little bohemian pubs and cafes IMO it wont be a pleasant experience, however small town life is superb if you live in a town with good transport links.

I don't know Australia though but from what I have heard there isn't a chance I would leave to live in inner city squalor dressed up as edgy and vibrant, it's just scruffy shit.
 
You have a country that is almost the size all of Europe bar russia, with half the population of England it must feel completely different. Being in small towns in England is nice but the cities are cramped polluted dumps in the main. Really depends on what you enjoy, if they want castles and history just have holidays in the UK?

I do know Ashton and Stalybridge centres are grim now. I have family and a few old mates who live there and tell me stuff, it's a real shame, Ashton used to be a very bustling town in the 70s, great shops and big market, great place to go for everything you needed.
I have this distinct memory, aged about 18, of buying a US army combat jacket from army and Navy store on Stamford street and a pair of Wrangler jeans from a shop on what was called the avenue. Then going in the snooker hall.

I actively avoid city centres and the only time I hit crowds is for the football (Genuinely one of the top reasons to live in the UK).

Small towns are where it's at for me, I despise Manchester city centre with a passion and if I have to go through there it is just to use the station or a bus.

Seriously though if you avoid all the urban slums England is a lovely place to live.

Agree with him about shoes though;)

I would never walk into someone's house though with my shoes on.

People will probably disown me for this but Liverpool is a lot more comfortable to walk around as is Newcastle, I hate saying this but Manchester city centre is a slum, a wart on the arse of humanity it's easily the worst place I have ever seen and I have seen some shitholes in my life.

I have said too much ;-)

Last time I walked out of Manchester Airport, it was like a time warp but with a lot more turbans at the taxi rank. I almost turned around to get a ticket the fuck out of there
