Not qualifying for the champions league would hamper his first season more. He will have to manage the situation he has when he's in.I am not sure we are going to eat in the summer budget and hamper Viana's first season as DoF by bringing in expensive January signings. No pun intended. We brought in Bony due to us going for both De Bruyne and Sterling. Both weren't cheap at the time.

Wish we’d take a closer look at players out of contract in the summer.
Jonathan David - very consistent goalscorer the past 5 years, would be a great backup to Haaland.
Alphonso Davies, probably going Madrid but should at least gauge his interest.
Jonathan Tah, rumoured to be going Bayern.
Kimmich still got a few years left in him and is a brilliant player.
Wish we’d throw our weight around a bit more when contracts are nearing the end. Bayern and Madrid are great at getting these sorts for free or at a massive discount, absolutely no reason why we shouldn’t be doing the same.

Agreed, we still try and be friends with them rather than behaving like the huge club we now are?
Ok. Let's just write the season off then so that the new fella have a nice cushy start, or maybe we can start the rebuild now. The manager is in place, Viana will have been selected with our way of playing in mind. The January window is solely down to Txiki, as it should be. Viana takes post in the summer but is involved in a handover process from February. That being the case, the club has to behave as it would at any other time. If Txiki has identified targets in January then they must be pursued, regardless of what Viana thinks. Txiki is being paid to be our DoF until the summer, so he should perform the role in its fullest form until the day he leaves the club.

The issues is getting the players to move and that would involve throwing more money around than usual. Something that we really do on a regular basis. We have tried to sign Mahrez mid-season after being rejected by Sanchez for the millionth time but Leicester didn't want to sell at that particular time (ie wanting more money than we were willing to pay at that time). I don't think that if the right player comes available in Jan with Pep agreeing that we will wait until Viana formally starts. The issue is who is that right player in January? Whether he is going to be priced out in January? Whether he really wants a more riskier move in our current state.
