Memories of Newcastle May 1968, title decider.

Went up very very early with my dad in his Wolsley 18/60, got there 9 ish. I was about 12.
Scoffed the packed lunch mum did us for breakfast.
Walked around the market in Newcastle in morning, watched the match from their main stand just above the tunnel.
So many City fans , pitch invasion at end.
Tyne bridge full of cars beeping horns on way home.
Gave some lads a lift home got back very late.
Up in morning to get Sunday papers.

I was 8 and went on the coach with my dad

Older brother sat at the back with his cool mates , me near the front with dad

We left late as we had to wait for Ernie from the pot shop closing up before we could leave

For years afterwards I would recognise the faces of others on the coach

I was perched on the perimeter wall by the edge of the leazes penalty area with my feet in the pitch drainage pipes
You would have had a good view of buzzer opening the scoring that afternoon then.

I was a nipper but my dad took me. He was so proud. I can’t remember much about it but that was my very first game.

yes but it was like ping pong as they matched us goal for goal , the two geordies either side of me ( about the same age as me ) were getting very giddy as well

My mate was Don. We went with his dad in his Rover. Buzzer was fantastic that year, in the Ballet on Ice and here too.
I just could not believe it, we had stood on the Kippax in Div 2 and we were terrible. Then Joe came along and miracles took place.
A great day and we were old enough to have a few pints!
Only 43 years left to wait for the next one. Pipped the rags again.

If you'd been born around 1920 then you'd be less than 50 and might have also witnessed City winning the League Title in 1937

Sounds far fetched but no different to me seeing City winning the League Cup in 76 and then the FA Cup and PL under Mancini

My late father was born 11 12 13 into a fanatical family of Denton Blues.

He was in the 84569, ran all the coaches from Crown point to the 55 & 56 Wembley finals.

He took me to City in 1958 as a 6 yr old and then to as many games as possible until myself and brother flew solo.

He was ejected from the scratching shed at Elland Rd in the 67 cup tie for getting into what he described as a "disagreement with a bloody tyke"

He loved City and loathed everything about the rags and one of his finest achievements in his lifè was passing these qualities down to following generations.

He would've loved the Sheikh Mansour era !!

I had recently passed my driving test, I was 17 years old. Took my dad and 2 mates in an Austin mini 850. We go a bit lost as we were driving through the outskirts of Newcastle so I stopped and asked a local how to get to St James’s Park. Got back in the motor and my dad asked how close we were, I said I haven’t got a clue, I couldn’t understand a word he’d said!

Finglands coach from the newsagents on Kingsway with a load of school mates,(Burnage Grammar),all of us around 14/15 years old.Got chucked out of the ground for summert or other, went to a different turnstyle and paid again.
On the pitch at the end,dug up a bit of turf, put it in a platic bag and kept it until it crawled away on it's own!
Had my first ever pint in Leeds, and as we walked into the boozer,it was full of Leeds fans who all applauded us and told us how happy they were that we'd pipped the rags!!
Decent day out all in all.

Went up in our kids Ford Zephyr. Smoked about 40 fag's by full time. Completely shattered. Remember having to pull over going home, the rain was absolutely bouncing down and couldn't see the road ahead.
Was your brother working for the Parks Dept at the time? If so, I think I was in that blue Zephyr with you!

My dad was there. Went with a car full from the junction pub, cheadle hulme.

He just remembers the geordies being brilliant afterwards and wouldnt let the city fans buy a drink

Geordies have now gone about a century themselves since they were last champions. Makes you think, doesn't it? Also worth pondering the rumour that ADUG were considering NUFC instead of us. Had Keegan's Newcastle done it in the mid-nineties (having led United by ten points), I wonder if that might have swung it.
