Memories of Newcastle May 1968, title decider.

I had recently passed my driving test, I was 17 years old. Took my dad and 2 mates in an Austin mini 850. We go a bit lost as we were driving through the outskirts of Newcastle so I stopped and asked a local how to get to St James’s Park. Got back in the motor and my dad asked how close we were, I said I haven’t got a clue, I couldn’t understand a word he’d said!

Finglands coach from the newsagents on Kingsway with a load of school mates,(Burnage Grammar),all of us around 14/15 years old.Got chucked out of the ground for summert or other, went to a different turnstyle and paid again.
On the pitch at the end,dug up a bit of turf, put it in a platic bag and kept it until it crawled away on it's own!
Had my first ever pint in Leeds, and as we walked into the boozer,it was full of Leeds fans who all applauded us and told us how happy they were that we'd pipped the rags!!
Decent day out all in all.

Went up in our kids Ford Zephyr. Smoked about 40 fag's by full time. Completely shattered. Remember having to pull over going home, the rain was absolutely bouncing down and couldn't see the road ahead.
Was your brother working for the Parks Dept at the time? If so, I think I was in that blue Zephyr with you!

My dad was there. Went with a car full from the junction pub, cheadle hulme.

He just remembers the geordies being brilliant afterwards and wouldnt let the city fans buy a drink

Geordies have now gone about a century themselves since they were last champions. Makes you think, doesn't it? Also worth pondering the rumour that ADUG were considering NUFC instead of us. Had Keegan's Newcastle done it in the mid-nineties (having led United by ten points), I wonder if that might have swung it.
