Txiki Begiristain | Has left the club after 13 years (pg50)

His recruitment at Barcelona were largely very poor as well. Massively helped by a generation of great academy products and Pep Guardiola. If you remove Pep from Txiki's career I very much doubt anyone would see him as this great DoF. If you remove Txiki from Pep's career, you still have the best manager on the planet.

To Txikis credit though, he probably were the one to take a chance on Pep when he was Barcelona B manager over the likes of Mourinho.
I think thats very harsh. Nobody does everything right, but the facts are that he has assembled a squad by many regarded as the best in the world for years, and our trophy record under him speaks for itself.
How much is on him and how much is on others anyone can speculate about, but as our Sporting Director he has obviously been a major part of it.

With that said, it's a sport. Just as he deserves credit and being celebrated when the squad he has put together wins everything, he should have his fair share of criticism when the results go completely downhill. We cant and shouldn't take away what he has achieved during his time here. But that doesnt mean we cant ask serious questions about our poor recruitment since winning the treble.

Bringing in new players is one element of the DOF job and whether it's him or the club but we seem to do better when there is a release clause rather than hard negotiation. I cannot think of many occasions when we've made a stella signing for Pep where a RC hasn't been in place.

He’s done a lot of good for us but the recruitments the last 3 years have left us where we are now. It’s been a steady downward slope since treble winning season and it indeed seems like the 4 in a row season was the end of our wonderful golden generation of players. Now we need to get back to the levels of the recruitment that happened during and after Pep’s first season so that it will be at maximum one off season.

Not a prayer for Musiala and Wirtz, they are better staying where they are, another two deals we have blown

Come on mate, Txiki hasn't done anything wrong.

Nope, and that post ,is from somebody that doesn't understand his job.He doesn’t decide either the budget or how much we spend on individual players.
No but he is partially responsible for recomending top class footballers. Doku, Nunes and Phillips have clearly taken us backwards not forwards. No one knew Gundogan was going to turn out badly but we really should be looking for younger players.
