Didn't you have a job to help pay for your fashion clobber ?
I was helping my Dad on his UCD milk round ( on Higher Crumpsall) from age 10. I used to save my money and eventually started buying my clothes with it aged about 13 years old.
I did a paper round but all my money went on City ...... and beer* but it was never enough to buy my own clothes and my mam and dad didn't have any money for crombies :-)

*Yep in those days pubs let you in.

Anyone remember the patchwork jumpers? Have looked on line to try and find one and can't even find any pictures of anyone wearing one, I'd love another if I could find one before I'm 70 8-).

Update - looked again and found this !
Lad with the red hair has a jumper on pretty much like the one I remember having!

I had one and a football jumper and a star jumper.... looked a right **** (worse than now)

Remember that game went with a mates older brother who drove in his escort Mexico went pub first away pub I think great memories shame about the result although I remember we should of at least drawn
I remember that game, Barnes scored and the ref gave it ofside, I swear it wasnt, cost us the title?

About 1975 at a guess, i used to have the doc's and a three star jumper. most Utd fans looked like this well into the 1980's.
I had a Star jumper whilst at School, left in 1975 so they came out at least around that time but I'd guess 73, "Football jumpers" were around the same era but they had nothing to do with football, Tonics, Sylvester's, Penny Round shirts, Ben Sherman shirts, Blazers with loads of buttons on the sleeve, Crombies, DM's (or for my Tomboy sister, Monkey Boots), glam rock, then punk rock, what an era to be a teenager.

Edit: blazers were called Barathea's.

Despite what the current moaning generation, who can't allegedly afford anything tell you, we had no money then so yes we were scruffy bastards.
I wanted to be a 'smoothie' as the fashion was called. Ben Sherman, Crombies, etc, they looked effin' smart, could I afford it ? Could I fuck.
Solatio crossovers
Flares/Joe Bloggs
Tank top
Trench coat

Maybe a burgundy single breasted leather jacket in warmer times.
