A trip down memory lane around Manchester....

did it stand for South East Lancs North East Cheshire? I'm sure GMPTE took over SELNEC.

Probably after local Govt reorganisation in 1974?
Yep. MCTD ran Manchester buses, the downside being that the buses were red, which is why we used to wait for the Rochdate 17bus in blue 'n cream. Then SELNEC came along with fuckin' orange buses, and then the free for all except there was nowt free about it.

Yes it did stand for that. It changed it's name to Greater Manchester Transport in 1974 and that in turn became GMPTE later in 1974. I still remember fondly the old buses open at the back when you could hop on and off!

Bus conductors must have been trained on the waltzers and boy was it cold on the bus in the winter :)

Yeah every local authority had their own livery - Manchester the devils colour, Bury green, Rochdale blue n cream, Ashton a sort of maroon, Stockport, I think, were cream/white with a splash othe devils shade!

seem to remember green in Salford as well?

Nay, Ashton's were blue and cream. SHMD and Salford green and cream. Stocky was red and cream, but always immaculate, whereas Manchester's (except when new or repainted) were a grubby red, usually caked in shit, with cream (later white) trim.

The change to SELNEC was about 1969, a result of the 1968 Transport Act.

I only remember this as there was a little ditty:

'Balls to Barbara Castle, and fuck to Richard Marsh,
And the 1968 Transport Act, you can stick it up your arse.'

Oldham Street circa 1970

What and where was that shop? That weird sculpted shite on the outside reminds me of the indoor UFO themed roller coaster that used to be at Blackpool pleasure beach.

I think it got closed after some kid stood up and was decapitated, though maybe that was just an urban legend.

Food of the gods that place

The closure of that place should be classed as a crime.

I might be wrong, but does the previous owner now have a place in York? I have actually been there, very nice, but not the same, but sure there is a connection.
