In my opinion, a coach has to be extremely ruthless and sell star players when they are at their peak. If you don't do that, you have the problem we now have with players like Walker and KDB in their final year and contributing very little.
Sell your best players at their peak to your competitors? Really?

We don’t buy players to sell on for a profit. That's never been our business model, if you look at how long our senior squad members have been at the club.

The glaring issue facing us is our failure around succession planning. We should be grooming the next gen players when our senior players are nano metres past their peak, so their understudy can serve an apprenticeship, like we saw with Fernandinho & Rodri.

They're totally different players, but I recall Fernandinho quietly berating Rodri for not taking out a player on the counter, forcing Fern to do it for him. These crucial on field lessons from the Master of Dark Arts, helped shape the current world player of the year.

And when you say get called out, you mean talked bollocks about with the advantage of hindsight ad nauseum?
It takes hindsight to know that we have 7 defenders, 2 are full time crocks, one, half the fan base don’t even think he is a defender and another is in his second year of decline(who is also captain and doesn’t even turn up for games now)? It takes hindsight to know that if Haaland got injured, the season would have been a complete write off? Hindsight to know that Rodri was somehow going to come a crop even when he said himself he’s playing too many games?

We also went into the season with Doku and Grealish, both notoriously don’t score enough and unproven Bobb and Savinho. There is no hindsight needed whatsoever.

I still hope even if this passes that the club doesn’t stop going for players in summer. There‘s still Baena and a good fullback out there and someone who CAN PLAY WITH OR WITHOUT Rodri. Also the fact that we still refuse to buy a RB when we desperately need one is hilarious. Look at last game.

There will always be a drop off at some point I agree but there seems like there was no real plan to refresh the squad which has made the situation worse. Instead we ended up pushing issues which were always going to need addressing (replacing Walker, replacing De Bruyne, re enforcing the centre backs because half of them are usually injured, a striker, a DM, legs in midfield as most of them are over 30) to 2025.

That's such poor management of the squad.

How do you replace Walker and Kdb, while Walker and kdb are still at the club, still deserve playing time and still have time on 9, 10 year contracts? While also having Phil, Bernardo, Grealish and others at the club btw.

Not sure how Pep’s words ‘ I didn’t want any signings’ affect players we are interested in.

Bobb, Doku and Savinho are developing young players. Rodri was over-played but you can't predict an injury like an ACL based on fatigue. All you can say is that they become more likely.

Exactly, they are developing players, it would have made sense to have some class and experience there with them. Instead Savinho has been forced to hit the ground running.

I agree you couldn’t have predicted an ACL, but you could have predicted some sort of injury was coming, us and Spain have been spamming this lad for years. How many warning signs were needed that we go to shit without him, we dropped points in every game he didn’t play last year.

Baena? doubt we sign a 5th LW this window.

Yes really. You should do that if you can. Alexis Sanchez imminent decline was obvious, KDB and Walker's decline was also very obvious. Liverpool are going to take a hit next season if they extend Van Dijk and Salah's contracts. If you don't replace players at their peak you get boom bust. That is part of succession planning. That is part of the reason why players like Cole Palmer left. How do you groom the next gen. players if you don't move the experienced players on while they are still marketable. It might have been very difficult to sell KDB because he was injured but he has been a problem for us for a while. It's possible to anticipate. I think part of the problem is that coach's think about themselves more than they think about the club so they make the call for the here and now rather than for the future. Ferguson knew he was at Man Utd for decades and managed accordingly. Pep has mismanaged the current side. He's even said so.

I agree it's very difficult to replace those 2 because they are already at the club. You will need them to run out their contracts. So why not look at the various other areas that need addressing like a DM to compliment Rodri, or a striker, maybe a centre back to cover the inevitable injuries rather than leave everything for 2025?

Only because he was such a **** they wanted out.
I don't know about that. Pep moved players on when he was Barca coach but then he was thinking about the future. At City, this season is the result of short-termism and not fully appreciating the imminent decline of senior players and the development of clearly very talented players in the academy.

The same situation is developing at LFC in Van Dijk and Salah. It's not difficult at all to predict the peak years of players. What is more difficult is predicting and identifying the development of young players. Bobb for example blossomed. It was a genuine surprise to me to see him playing with the quality he showed in pre-season.

probably but he's not playing the 6 and we need a more defensive minded player in there. IF we go for him it'll be summer. imo, need to get Jack out the way

Yeah true, i just hope we are actually in the mix for him! I wonder if the club while talking to Frankfurt have approached them regarding Larsson?
