Erling Haaland signs 9.5 year new contract!

You know it - Injuries/Sudden decline in form/lack of motivation/falling out with the manager, anything can happen. There is a reason why clubs don't do this. Chelsea had to buy too many players and amortize the transfer fees, so that was different.
On the flip side, would you rather be in Liverpools position? TAA, VVD and Salah all free to leave for nothing?

1) it’s no different than Palmer at Chelsea

2) insure the contract

Of course not. A 5 year contract with options to extend and renew terms is understandable, this one is baffling.

I believe they call it INSURANCE, and you can carry it on all your contracts in case of career-ending injury. In business, they call it “key man” insurance, but you may have heard of one of the most famous cases…Brian Bosworth, NFL player. Came out of college as a beast and touted as the next big thing. Got a massive deal, got career-ending injury almost immediately. Most of contract was guaranteed, but club had insured him!

Brian Bosworth, a former Seattle Seahawks linebacker, had two insurance policies with Lloyd's of London. In 1993, Bosworth won a $7 million lawsuit against Lloyd's after the insurer refused to pay his claims.

In 2026, the Browns will receive $44m for Deshaun Watson (I don't like him either!) not playing in 2025 due to an achilles injury. This is salary cap proofed so it will free up a further $44m for the Browns to spend on other players. :)
