Top 8 standard PL player, struggles to step up against top opposition at CL level. Hardly a shocker is it? I don’t know why some have expected him to turn into a world-beater, he’s never been that. It shouldn't need saying any longer but going by the unjust criticism it clearly does. He isn't. Has never been and never will be a holding midfielder. He's doing what he can put of position.

Alongside Bernardo, he's come up against a proper functioning midfield 3 all in their proper positions and with a man advantage. It should be no surprise to anybody that we got completely overrun in midfield. No point repeatedly slating him for not being something hes never claimed to be. Was no lack of effort from him.

I think that's unfair, and the post just before you from ninja monkey was a much more accurate analysis of what's happening.
Basically, players who are unfamiliar with the Rodri role, playing alongside players like Bernardo who are not exactly defensive mids, in front of a defense hit by injuries, and an attack that has ageing and slow, albeit still excellent players like KDB.
Kovacic would be absolutely fine playing alongside a fit Rodri.

Kovacic being a starter sums up the total failure of the powers that be’s squad recruitment.
Yes its not his fault. I get that.
But with the correct recruitment, he would and should not be any where near the first team squad.
