President Trump

Drill baby drill will increase the world supply of oil, regardless of where it is processed, which will reduce overall world prices and indirectly benefit US customers. If it was processed in the US there would be more direct benefits, but this way we and the US customers benefit !
Trump's stance on drilling is bollocks. The USA is already pumping more oil out of the ground per month then it ever has in history.

Those horrible, horrible corporations -- imagine them want to grow revenue and shrink cost -- how DARE they?

If I ran a company, I'd be hoping for demand to stagnate and production costs to rise.
I'm all for capitalism, but not at the cost of exploiting workers to the point of poverty just to increase shareholder profit a few points on the Dollar. That's just obscene.

Don’t OPEC limit the production per day, so drilling more won’t acrtually do much, would it?

I fully agree, corporate greed is absolutely at the heart of the issue.

The corporations want and have mass immigration to allow them to make more profits by having more consumption by more people, whilst simultaneously that mass immigration also has the effect of allowing the corporations to suppress wages and erode T&C's of their employees.

There are plenty of ways that migrants can and do receive state support including benefits and tax credits, it's a complete fallacy to suggest they can't despite what the "rules" may suggest. And the impact of mass immigration devaluing labour has resulted in a huge increase in all people relying on benefits and tax credits due to the suppressed wages that everyone, both natives and immigrants alike, are now subject to.

Only 16% of migrants arrive in the UK with a valid work visa, you can't seriously believe that the other 84% all immediately find highly paid jobs instantly making them net contributors to the tax take.
In the UK, illegal immigration through the asylum channels incurs a cost to the economy, but those who don't go through asylum channels contribute to the economy through spending their illegal earnings, even if they do send some of that money overseas.

Of course. But then we’d have to get into specifics, right? It’s stupid to tar all corporations with the same brush as if it’s some inherent problem with the profit-based model that’s the cause of all our woes.

Oil prices are not set by supply and demand in the usual way. OPEC reduces supply if the price drops, for example. Oil prices are politically driven.

It is largely set by supply and demand but influenced by politics. Otherwise Opec would simply set the price at $200 a barrel and expect / see no reduction in the number of barrels sold. With cheaper and plentiful sources available elsewhere (like Shale) plus Russia and other countries desperate for foriegn currency OPEC is not the power source it once was. Even wihtin OPEC there are different factions and interest groups - those that want to pump more and are desperate for funds and are not so much interested in the long-game.

Regardless of the above, if US produce more oil from shale it will keep prices lower and benefit the US consumers either directly or indirectly.

Shale oil is expensive to produce, which creates a floor below which wells get capped. IIRC, it’s in the low 70s, while deep well producers are still in the $45-50 break even range.

Trump may be able to jawbone some small incremental price change, but the global nature of the supply-demand equation, plus the cartel’s semi-strong control of price (they all cheat on quotas!), means $XX +/- $5 or so is about it.

I wonder when someone is going to stand up to Trump and tell him to fuck off, tariffs or no tariffs? He’s still in his “shock and awe” honeymoon phase, but the world is getting tired of his schtick already, so hopefully it won’t be too long.

The US is already “drilling, baby, drilling” and has been for years, with 2024 being a record year, so I’m not sure there’s any incremental millions of barrels the US can use to upset any global production balance.

Supply and demand is a very simple concept for anyone to grasp - at its highest level. Of course, and as you point out, it doesn’t work that cleanly in reality, and the one place where the concept is totally perverted the most is in the oil & gas/ energy sector which is deeply, deeply political. Take it from me, I’ve worked in and around it for the last 20 years.

Naturally, people like trump just like the simple to digest headlines and blame everyone else/ imaginary bad actors when things get obfuscated by the details and reality.

Trump sets out to destroy the two state solution.
Trumps picks for ambassadors to the UN and to Israel both believe in ‘biblical Israel’ which means no two state solution in Israel/Palestine. Hukerbee, the ambassador to Israel says there is no such thing as ‘a Palestinian’ nor ‘the west bank’ which he says is Israel.
Now trump has stated that he favours ethnic cleansing of Gaza. We should just “clean out” Gaza and ask other Arab states to take all the Muslims who would be displaced. This is the most disgraceful statement from a western government that you could ever imagine.

There’s worse to come.

It’s just the latest idea from the last person he spoke to on the subject!

That said, the level of absolute simplicity to most of his ideas should set alarm bells ringing everywhere.

Until someone stands up, points at him and says, “The Emperor is not wearing any clothes!” he will continue to strong arm people…it’s all he knows.

People have to understand that you have to stand up to a bully, even if you get a black eye in the process.

What’s Trump going to go? Nuke everyone that disagrees with him? Invade everything he wants? Put 100% tariffs on everything?

The strength of his arguments is to target a weak player and scare all the risk averse wobbly kneed politicians around the world.

Greenland is a prime example. He thinks Denmark is a little weak country, so he runs roughshod over them. Greenland should threaten to expel Thule Space Base and impose 100% tariffs on any and all American goods.

The normalization of such abhorrent and deviant diplomatic language must be avoided at all times and it should be made clear that verbal diarrhea at his advanced age is not a defence for threatening to invade and occupy a supposed ally.

Panama is in the same position, although allowing Chinese ownership of the Canal is a huge mistake. Without a military, they are vulnerable, because the Canal is vital to the US strategic and economic interest.

It’ll be interesting to see if Mexico ever opens their own!

Denmark is not weak. Like all from that part of the world, their historical Calvinism makes them steely. The best from the EU and UK will back them.
Agree about Thule, hit him where it hurts….his pride.

Not really...

After World War II, twelve to fourteen million Germans were displaced from their homes in Eastern and Central Europe. This was one of the largest forced population movements in history.

The two state solution has been dead for a very long time, it has no political backers worth shit, the only difference now is that unlike Biden, Trump doesn't feel the need to pay lip service to it.

Be under no illusion Israel has won this war. Where this goes now depends on whether Trump is willing to take it to the next level, my guess is he won't. Trump likes soundbites and easy wins, this is far from an easy win.

I had a boss like that once, a nightmare, like working for a butterfly.

From Trump’s pov, it isn’t true that nobody worth anything backs the two state solution. Saudi, for a start and he needs them. Uk..oh, you might have a point. I wonder what our glorious PM will say to him. Arse licking so far from his ambassador.
