New CL Format Thoughts

Still trying to figure out the draw for qualifying round I make it 9th to 16th are seeded 17th to 24th are unseeded so 1 drawn from unseeded pot will play 1 drawn from seeded pot ? they like to make it complicated.

Complicating matters even further has completely turned me off the CL. I never really liked the previous group format but still went to the games. I promised myself that I would remain in the CL Cup Scheme until we won it, and I did. I now watch the CL games on telly and don't miss being there one bit. Whilst obviously wanting us to do well, I can't say that I enjoy this over hyped competition anymore.

The uefa site has an ‘as it stands’ format for the play offs and last 16 based on current positions 1 to 24. Not quite sure how they decide the split like 23 or 24 v 9 or 10.

Really enjoyed Porto (apart from game of course} and Istanbul so I've stuck with it, no doubt we'll find out how draws conducted in due course.

9th-16th seeded, 17th-24th unseeded.

The pairings are:
09/10 v 23/24
11/12 v 21/22
13/14 v 19/20
15/16 v 17/18

A draw on the 31st January will decide who plays who in the playoff round.

A draw for the last 16 onwards will be made on the 21st February.

The pairings for the last 16 are the below (x2):
07/08 v 09/10/23/24
05/06 v 11/12/21/22
03/04 v 13/14/19/20
01/02 v 15/16/17/18

Quarter-final pairings are the below (x2):
07/08/09/10/23/24 v 01/02/15/16/17/18
05/06/11/12/21/22 v 03/04/13/14/19/20

If we qualify we'll finish 19th-23rd, so the scenario highlighted bold above isn't possible for us.

It has never been a CHAMPIONS League. Never, ever, ever as far as I'm aware. - Unless they put in a group stage for champions only in the early 1990s.
It was the European Cup for champions and holders only and then became the CL for champions and runners up and others. The holders didn't even qualify automatically as UEFA thought any team good enough to win it would qualify from their league. However that rule changed when Liverpool won it in 2005.
We're only about five years away from it including non-champions for the same length of time as the original format.
I know it was never a Champions league - being a pedantic old bugger I don't like using the word Champions to define a team that finished second, third or fourth.

There's a larger collective of matches that I find harder to care about when City is not on, but admittedly facing the same team twice in the group stage is boring. And I'm not sure how to put it, but this league format feels less "dramatic"?

I do find it annoying that the group stage is still not concluded by the 2nd half of the season, though I guess that's what they are going for.

Just read Slots comments on making so many changes for their game tonight and didnt know this about the new format......
The benefit of being in the top two means they won’t face the second-placed side until the final as well as a place in the last-16 and all their second-leg ties in the knockout stages will be at home.

As soon as the draw is made for the the 9 to 24 play off games, every team will know their route to the final.

So just to clarify, the play-off phase is a straight up draw? So if we finish 24th, its not like we play 9th in the play off?

If we finished 24th, there'd be a draw to determine whether we face 9th or 10th.

Although I believe others on here have said it's impossible for us to finish 24th. Either we don't win, so we're not in the top 24 at all/are out of the competition or we win and we finish a few places higher than 24th (exactly where depends on other results)

24th would be an option of 9 or 10
23rd would also be an option of 9 or 10

How they decide whether it’s 9 or the 10 is probably some sort of engineered draw.

In effect we can only play a team in position 9 to 12, should we win tonight. More than likely a Bayern or Madrid in some of those slots.
