New CL Format Thoughts

The only bit I really don't like is that because of this 'League" we've apparently lost FA Cup replays and denied lower divison clubs the chance to have another go and massively increase their income against the 'big boys'. It's an utter disgrace IMHO.
Probably need to drop the Carabao cup now and bring those replays back.

Either that or preferably change again and reduce the CL games and stop being so greedy. Sadly I can't see either happening.
bang on.

This format is absolute shit. I've been totally disinterested in the last 7 games knowing we'll probably go through anyway due to the top 24 teams qualifying. It makes it all rather pointless. Personally, I'd make it a straight knockout with 32 teams in, now that would be good

I didnt word that correctly
Jan 31st I believe for the draw for last 16.
Jan 31st is the playoff round draw.

The playoff will be played and then the draw for the last 16 onwards will be done after that.

We will find out the pairings from the playoff round draw though and who from 9th-24th we can't face.

So for example:
If 9th drawn 23rd and 10th drawn 24th, then the winner of each of those ties can't meet each other until the final.

9th-16th seeded, 17th-24th unseeded.

The pairings are:
09/10 v 23/24
11/12 v 21/22
13/14 v 19/20
15/16 v 17/18

A draw on the 31st January will decide who plays who in the playoff round.

A draw for the last 16 onwards will be made on the 21st February.

The pairings for the last 16 are the below (x2):
07/08 v 09/10/23/24
05/06 v 11/12/21/22
03/04 v 13/14/19/20
01/02 v 15/16/17/18

Quarter-final pairings are the below (x2):
07/08/09/10/23/24 v 01/02/15/16/17/18
05/06/11/12/21/22 v 03/04/13/14/19/20

If we qualify we'll finish 19th-23rd, so the scenario highlighted bold above isn't possible for us.

If they are going down that route why not just simplify it, no draw, 9 plays 24, 10-23, and so on, and let it work itself out. The side thatbfinished higher gets home advantage. Done.

Honestly, probably for the 'excitement' of the draw.
They get to throw another piss up in Switzerland and have all eyes on UEFA for another morning.

I can't really think of a competitive reason, unless for example a team looks at the table at half time tonight and thinks we don't want Real Madrid in the playoff, let's throw it. Not sure teams really think like that but they all have to kick off at the same time as they can't be trusted, so who knows.

Networking is important, I guess. It could easily all be purely mathematical though. I take it they no longer do that teams from the same country can't play each other till the quaterfinals thing?

Yeah they don't do that now, we could draw Villa in the playoff round.

Well it turned out to be pretty exciting in the end.

Not sure how much of that was down to the new format and how much down to us chucking 2 and 3 goal leads away, all over the gaff though.

Villa got lucky with this new format no seedings as such now when we first competed in it we were seeded low got groups of death! We had a worse draw than Villa in this new format after being champs! Surely winning your league should give you some benefits

The final day wasn't quite as exciting as they'd thought it would be, was it?

The old way won’t be coming back anytime soon. It was good last night, the different ramifications and all.
