No, he is the problem.

We have a player who can’t receive the ball and move it forwards. Which is apparently what he’s meant to be great at.

Off the ball he’s horrendous.

Playing him is killing our season. Anyone would be better than that.

No he isn't. The position and the general shape are the problems not kovacic. Do you not remember how we were considerably worse whilst he was unavailable?

Why are we still banging on about him not being a holding midfielder? We all know he isn't one, kovacic has never been one, never will be, I doubt he'd ever claim to be and Pep himself acknowledges he isn't, it's not his fault when he's continually put in the wrong position.

Who would be better?

I don’t rate Kovacic anywhere near as highly as some. But can’t be too harsh on him given the setup.
Replace him with a fully fit and firing Rodri in that system today and we’d still have got pumped.

The single worst midfielder we’ve had since the takeover. Absolutely useless.
Bollocks. Not only is he not the worst midfielder we've had for 17 years, he's actually a decent part of one of City's best ever teams, and with his 1x Premier League title he's already won more than 99% of the midfielders we've had in our entire history.

Please remember how long it's been since the takeover and that we've had to watch Owen Hargreaves, Jack Rodwell, Bruno Zuculini, Fernando, and Kalvin Phllips in that time. I look back at Javi Garcia more fondly than others but I'd have Kovacic above him as well.

He's so inconsistent.
Capable of both greatness and calamity in the same 30 yards.

He was fucking awful yesterday.

A utter liability and cost us goals.

Indeed. Javier Garcia was decent in the second half of the 13-14 title winning season.

Kovacic has been a good solid signing for us.

7.40 on the city app ext highlights.

Gives the ball away which lead to a attempt at 3-1 and then the goal at 4-1.

Terrible stuff.
Trying to block the game out so I'm not watching the highlights to remind myself of a chance. You specifically said he cost us goals, them having a chance isn't a goal so whatever that chance was is irrelevant.

Going through the goals in my head, akanji passes the ball straight to them for the first, foden passes the ball straight to them for the second, marmoush let's his marker go and poppadum wrists in net cause the third, the fourth is his pass into savinho(?) Which was a good ball and should have been controlled but wasn't, from the edge of their box, they broke and akanji and stones couldn't deal with havertz. This is the first time he's had any involvement at all in the lead up to a goal and blaming him for a good pass that wasn't taken in on the edge of their box is very much clutching at straws. Then the fifth goal is all on the keeper. So yeah nice soundbite but he didn't directly cost us a single goal nevermind goals.

Fair points however in the city side of the last few years both javi Garcia and fernando would be miles ahead of this lad. They certainly weren’t great for the most part but also were playing with a less solid side. Fernando went on to flourish.

We’ve signed Owen Hargreaves, David Pizzarro, Jack Rodwell, Bruno Zuculini, Fernando, Fabian Delph (when he played in midfield, not when he was a worldy left back), Oleks Zinchenko (when he played in midfield, not when he was a decent left back), Luke Brattan, Kalvin Phillips… who are all worse than Kovačić.

He’s a poor defensive midfielder but he’s not a bad squad player. And has had a number of cracking games as an 8.

Not that I think he’s good enough ongoing, I do think we need to move him on.

is that the best try you can do for your claim? That ball was actually lost by Savinho and it was not a difficult ball plus it was an incisive pass into the box while 1:3 behind. what’s wrong with it? Another day or player it would be a goal threat.
