Hugo Viana | Director of Football

He's been left in the shit by Txiki.

Ageing squad, injury prone players, positions that need filling.

Going to take at least two summer transfer windows to fix.

has nowt been mentioned of him coming in early, must be planning for a summer shift that he feels he needs to end his time at sporting early and get started here.

2 full backs
1 DM
1 player with creativity
1 Forward

Who, I don’t know
Based on this, we have a DM, two creative forwards (Echeverri and Marmoush), one full-back (McFarlane), and two defenders (Reis and Khusanov).

Think it was always planned for after the January window.

Think it was the best/worst kept open secret out there. Wasn’t he supposed to be upping his workload with us gradually after January?

It’s good for us as there is a proper handover possible now. I don’t really see it as a panic move.

i dont think its panic at all, i take it as a positive sign that he is keen to get started and do the best possible job.

The original statement said they would work together to a hand over:

"Viana will begin his full-time role in the summer of 2025, but will collaborate with Txiki in the preceding months to ensure a smooth transition."

Guess the rumours and expectations were at least half true then. He would have to formally start with us now, but that must be the next thing now presumably.

He's completed his January work for Sporting, the job now shifts to the summer, he could work until then in securing deals for next season for them but sporting obviously have something else in mind. perhaps they've got his replacement lined up and want to have them identify targets instead and don't want the hassle of potentially being left with half done transfers. A clean break makes sense.

Viana now gets to spend 6 months unofficially working with txiki, learning from him and getting a sense of the job to make It an easier transition in the summer.
