The rebuild has started. Who goes?

Yes I agree with this.
You can have players who aren't that good as individuals excelling in a system now with good coaching, moreso than ever I think.

I look at Bournemouth and people saying Ryan Christie is their best player. Or Justin Kluivert, he was never that good until recently.
Brighton the last few seasons doing really well with the likes of Milner, Welbeck and Enciso to name but a few.

Fulham another example.

Its all about high energy now and pressing
Worth saying that the scousers and Tarquins don’t play that way and when you have better players and a solid structure, you can beat then high energy teams.

For those teams with players slightly below elite, the high energy, mad pressing style maximises their potential.

When Pep first came here, his interviews were all about “you have to run” to be in my teams. We were supreme 2018-20 doing that.

Then there was a drop off and Pep developed the false 9 Mr Whippy system that encouraged our players to run less.

That’s worked until we’ve got old.

Now we have to revert to first version Pep and get players to run with intensity.

Imho anyway!

Personally think along with Walker we’ll see De Bruyne, Gundogan and Grealish depart. And be replaced by a RB, Wirtz and probably another central midfielder.

3/4 to go, 3/4 to come in.

I take your point mate but there are so many posts in many threads about him being a liability, similar posts about Ortega too. We should be doing everything possible as a club to keep them both
People underestimate how hard it is to be a keeper and expect them to save the unsaveable at times.

Strikers have a 20% strike rate on goals. If they were held to account as much as keepers, every single striker would be called dogshit every week.

Ederson own choice
Ortega not a number 1, so will want too go
Carson or onto coaching staff

Stones if he has a 2nd half like the 1st half of season, gone
Akanji same as above
Ake same as above
Doku same as above

KDB sadly contract end, gone
Gundo same as above
Grealish just not fitting in
Nunes

McA gone with buyback

Need
Top CB maybe 2, or keep the above if okay 2nd half of season
Top RB
Top Keeper and back up
Top 10 or 6/8
4-5 top 1st team players in summer

I think the missing bit here is who might want to leave? I think Ederson, Gundo, KDB, Bernard and Jack are prime candidates. They've all been there, done that and got the T-shirt.

I'm sitting on the fence with this one. I hate anyone leaving us, it's wrong, we are a family...... we are MANCHESTER CITY, THE BEST TEAM IN THE LAND AND ALL THE WORLD.

Our players don't get older, slower. Can we keep them forever please? :-) ;-)

Out? Gundogan, KDB and Walker. I'd keep Nunes based on his adaptability. He has played in very difficult circumstances.

I expect City will sell Macatee and O'Reilly because Pep doesn't trust City's young players. That is a weakness in his coaching. He played Gundogan and KDB this season when I think he should have played younger players.

Don't disagree with too much in OP's list. However, I think we need to move away from the idea of ' a rebuild'. I don't think we want to be in the position again where we build a squad that eventually peaks and wins handsomely but then starts to fade and you have to do it all over again. There may have to be more churn in the coming years than we've been accustomed to, but the ambition should be that we maintain a squad that never needs such a dramatic overhaul.

Doesn’t make sense that McAtee and O’Reilly had firm offers to leave in January, but Pep insisted they stayed. So maybe you need to think again

Players to be moved on:

Goalkeeper:
Ederson

Defenders:
Rico Lewis
John Stones
Nathan Ake

Midfielders:
Illkay Gundogan
Matheus Nunes
Kevin De Bruyne
Mateo Kovacic
James McAtee

Fowards:
Jack Grealish

Absolutely no way will this group pf players be sold in one window, It's going to be done over time gradually moving them on.

I think Ederson will go to Saudi Arabia, I don't think we'll sell Ortega, We'll need a new goalkeeper as Ortega isn't good enough to be number one.

John Stones and Nathan Ake unfortunately can't stay fit, They aren't reliable as they can't stay fit, Plus both players are at the age now that there next contract will be there last contract. Rico Lewis isn't good enough in my opinion, He seems a great lad but unfortunately looks our of his depth.

Gundogan will definitely be gone this summer, Nunes is nowhere near good enough, Kovacic could also be moved on this summer if a decent offer comes in for him, James McAtee will be sold, He can't get a game right now and we've no midfield so he isn't going to get games when we bring in reinforcements. Kevin De Bruyne he deserves a top send off especially that we didn't have the chance to give a send off to Silva and Aguero, Would have been nice to send him off with a title this season.

Greaiish its looking more and more likely he's going, He cant get a kick.

Whoever goes or stays we need a bigger squad. I remember in Istanbul thinking how the players looked tired both physically and mentally. Last years cup final was another warning. I love this team, they've given me some of the best times ever. But there are only so many games players can play before fatigue and chronic injury becomes a factor. So maybe a bit more than a rebuild - a rethink about squad size and rotation too.

Think deep down Grealish is still pinching himself at seeing himself as a Premier league Champion and Treble winner.
But I think this summer he will have to address his situation and decide if he's happy at his appearance rate or still has ambition to play more football, probably somewhere else.
Can't see Kev still being here next season, but I'd hate to see him go at the end of a trophyless season (so we really need to win the FA Cup just in case he does)

Who would I keep?

Keepers
Love to keep Ederson but depends on him. He can be flaky but his distribution is key.
I think Ortega is a decent backup but I'm not sure he's a suitable first choice.

Defenders
Gvardiol,
Dias,
Maybe two of:
Akanji (but need to get this propensity for bad mistakes out of him if we can)
Ake (but used a bit more sparingly so hopefully he can stay fit)
Stones (as above)
The two new guys.

Midfield
Rodri
Kovacic (decent cover and useful in a more forward role)
Gonzalez
Bobb
Savinho
Doku (but want to see some progress next season)
Foden (although I'm 50/50 on him currently. Needs to buck up and has he still got the desire?
Nunez (Another I'm 50/50 on. I've seen bits that suggest there's a talent there so maybe worth another season playing in his proper position)

Forwards
Haaland
Marmoush

I'd also keep all the fringe younger players such as O'Reilly, McAtee, Simpson-Pusey

That means the following should be out:
  • At least one of Ake, Stones & Akanji, maybe two.
  • Walker
  • Lewis (going backwards fast imo)
  • Phillips
  • De Bruyne
  • Gundogan
  • Bernardo
  • Wilson-Esbrand (loan?)
  • Grealish

Are we including Pep?

Because this is the star all your planets revolve around.

Hes 1+ seasons left only.
Should he be unable to reverse the rot this season, he may well jack.

The rebuild needs to know who's (going to be) in charge imho.
Pep’s got 2 years 5 months left he could potentially extend, again

Ok, having started this ball rolling, I've read the thread so far with great interest. There's a lot of consensus on here. More than there is serious disagreement, in fact. It is, obviously, speculation. But, one hopes, informed speculation. We all watch City, every week. Many of us have been doing it for decades. I repeat — I repeat — that, speaking for myself, I am absolutely not saying “Oh, I think this guy is great, and must be kept”, still less, “Oh, I think he's wank, get rid”. It's not the point.

A couple of tweaks.
Ed: nobody, surely, is suggesting that Ed is anything other than one of the three or four best keepers in the world. At long-range passing, he is quite simply a UFO. I've never seen anything like it. I don't remember Sepp Maier or Dino Zoff being able to do that. Of course, they weren't asked to. Football has moved right on, by light years. Pep has been part of that movement. Shot-stopping? He's not the best in the world, but he's still pretty good. My suggestion is that it may be his own choice, if Saudi comes in for him with absolutely silly money, to go and get a humungous pay day over a couple of years, which no club in Europe could possibly compete with.
That said, if Ed were to go, I'd be very, very surprised if the club didn't fight tooth and nail to keep Stefan. Because he's a damn good keeper. Not Ed level, but still good. And you don't replace two keepers of that level in one window. You just don't.
Kev. Again, if Kev goes, it will be by mutual consent, and amicable on both sides. I have no doubt about that. Yes, with runners beside him, Kev could still play a role, maybe a major one, for another year. I think it's open whether he stays or goes.
Doubt that if Gundo goes, Kova will too. We're then back to Rod playing match after match after match on his own. Nico still a somewhat unknown quantity at this point. Kova's a good player. If he's got someone dynamic playing next to him. Sadly, that man is no longer Gundo.
The back line. Again, no management that isn't certifiably insane clears out an entire back line in one window. Walker, I think we can assume, is gone. Gvardiol, I'd be more than astonished if he didn't stay. Rúben, he has leadership qualities in the back line that are recognised by Pep and the management. Love Nathan and Johnny — both of them, terrific defenders, with different qualities — but the injury problems are there, and they've been there for seasons now. The management must be looking at that, and thinking. Bringing in Khusanov was surely part of that thinking.
McAtee — interesting to see that for some of you he's definitely on his way out. I just have my doubts. Pep gave what appeared to be a firm verbal assurance. That's what he said publicly. Surely, then, what he said in private to James and his agent must have been firmer? Yes, it's puzzling that he hasn't been getting minutes.
Finally, Pep. I had understood that Pep had renewed for two years as of this coming summer. Did I dream that? Of everyone that's been mentioned, Pep's position at the club is surely impregnable. He's more impregnable than any player out there on that pitch. When you've done what he's done over eight years — things that have never been seen in England — you've got rather a lot of credit with your owners. Only if City were in serious danger of relegation would his position be seriously under threat. And even then, I may be imagining that. Who better to get you out of a relegation scrap than the Catalan? I'd relish seeing that…

Departures:

Ederson and/or Ortega
One or two from Ake, Stones and Akanji
Walker
At least one from Bernardo, Gundogan, Kovacic and KDB
McAtee
Phillips
Grealish

I’m not completely sold on Nunes and Doku but I think they’ll remain here unless someone comes in with a generous offer.

We are rebuilding for Pep for 2 years , if he stays longer great if he doesn’t he’ll have built a team for somebody else, somebody that will have a similar philosophy thats the whole point of a DOF. There isn’t a club in the world that knows for sure who their manager will be in 27/28 season,so worrying about 2 1/2 years down the road is pointless.
Whats your alternative, do nothing until Pep leaves ?
1stly,

It's 1+1 for Pep if I am not mistaken.
If he's going as he is at the moment this time next season, I think he'll bin it off. Pep is Peps biggest critic.

2ndly, if he does the two, that's still only two, and the football season doesn't end anymore. He won't wake up on the last day of the season and tell the club he's off. He'll give them notice.

So that's next season and then probably he's more than likely off and will let the club know in Nov I imagine.

I can't see a world where City pander to Peps team wishes without increasing resistance and caution as his end nears.

We've been saying the summer window was shit because he was likely leaving this year so it's not a flawed logic.

I think this sets the play for what happens in this summer window.

I appreciate YMMV.
