He is a right back and has always been a right back.

he isn't a wing back or midfielder though and should not be venturing further than our 20 yard line and just concentrate on defending

Interesting

The only time I see him doing decent work is in little pockets in the opposition half

I'd be very concerned if his only job was to defend at right back because he can't, especially against anyone with a fraction of decent pace.

It's not his fault, he shouldn't have been playing.

Pep should know his ability. Putting him in a game like this is just chucking him out the trench in no mans land.

Bottom half of the table sides, yes. Real fucking Madrid, no.

Pep has ruined him by playing him all over the place. Now looks like a Preston level player.

I think the real problem is putting him at right back when he's slow and lacks physicality and expecting him to be able to do anything against quick forwards. I don't think it's a case of ruining him because that implies he has been capable but actually it's a job he couldn't do in the first place.

Whatever his position is, it's definitely not at right back.

He's a midfielder. Would like to see him take Bernardo's role in the squad next season. Would also like to see what would happen if we played Bernardo at full-back every week like we do Rico - or maybe I don't.

A young lad who deserves another season further up the pitch. He's technically gifted, nippy, doesn't shy away from a scrap, and has a bit of an eye for goal. Would like to see him as an #8 for a proper run.

Not every academy lad we have needs to be a world beater. Saved the treble season imo when Cancelo threw a wobbly, was an important player in our team last year. He can get back there, just needs patience.

Every team needs its John O'Shea and if Rico's happy being ours then I'm happy with him staying for a while. Do think he deserves a chance further up the pitch - he has the attributes - but unsure if Pep will give it him.
Do we have an unlike button available

Don’t ever be a football scout. He has no where near the ability to play that role.

You need to be a top class elite player to play for City in midfield as a key man, especially further up the field.

We’re talking De Bruyne, Silva, Yaya, Fernandinho, Rodri, Bernardo, Gundogan etc. Hell, even Foden isn’t consistently at that level, never mind Lewis.

How is Rico still playing in 2025?

Pep had a window and got two CB's who are too young to start. A striker/winger who will take months to gel.
And a CM who can still prove to be good but may take time to bed in.

No one in the two weakest positions opposing teams exploit. RB and CDM.

Regardless, young Lewis just isn't good enough. Pep must love his spirit as it looks like he tries, but he lacks the speed, strength, footballing ability and IQ to be a key part of a world class team beyond a cup substitute in injury time while up by 5 goals.

First the positives, he doesn't hide and he tries his best, did well with Foden winning the penalty and a couple of decent challenges.

Now the negative, no positional awareness, no pace or strength. Not good enough to be either a defender or midfielder at an elite level, he'll make a living so fair play to him. When we're on top he looks OK, put him under pressure and he's less than useless.

Pep loves him, but I think that's part of the problem, he's Peps project, which sadly isn't working, when he started warming up before halftime when Akanji got injured, everyone who was sat around me either groaned or said what the fuck, he's becoming more of a problem than a solution.

He got stuck in a bit to be fair, more than a few others had, but tells you everything really when his only stand out performance this season (for me anyway) was on Saturday v Orient ffs

That's absolutely nonsense.

He's not a midfielder, he gets blown over by the wind & he can't see a forward pass. He's a right back but not at our level.
