Great input. I’m not saying he should be sold…I’m just saying he’s getting close to the point where if he was I wouldn’t be bothered, especially if we got a Wirtz in IMO. His effort off the ball this season has been diabolical…what’s so mental about that.

Like a lot of players he hasn't hit the standards set from previous seasons. But no way should be even up for consideration to be sold.

One thing about Phil is he has never played senior club football under anyone but Pep. It's all he knows. He might very much be a Pep system player, which means when the team performances are low, so are his. His drop off this season has been about the same as the team as a whole and he hasn't got the excuse of being old or injuries like others.

That would tie in with the fact he doesn't play that well for England.

A friend of mine who doesn't support City went to a City game a couple of seasons ago and his main take away from an objective POV was that he'd never seen a player so specifically coached to play a certain system and role for a manager than Foden. I disagree at the time actually but now I wonder if there was some truth to it.

I rate him very highly and think he would succeed anywhere in time, but I do wonder if part of his struggles this season is because of the above.

You shouldn’t talk bad about him here. Someone got attacked for calling Foden not being Mbappe lvl which is basically facts. There‘s 1-2 players on this forum who just can’t get criticized. And when they do it’s because he „always has something going on.“
If his overall game was that good he would play well for the national team like the other players do and also we wouldn’t be interested in wirtz. Foden will never be our 10. too dependent on his left foot and not a very good passer neither has the

Plenty criticise Phil Foden and dont make silly comments like you or the poster you quoted have both said.

No comments on Phil? I thought he put in a fairly mature performance. He had to keep things simpler due to the way Newcastle defended, but he did his part in keeping the attack ticking.

He did but his workrate off the ball still needs to be a lot better, the Viking was bollocking him several times yesterday and rightly so.

To be fair, the lad isn’t saying Foden should be sold or thinks he will be sold, he’s just saying that he wouldn’t be all that mithered if he was sold (more of a hypothetical thing). I would be bothered if we sold Foden, but it’s not going to happen anyway thankfully.

I agree with him about Foden’s off the ball effort levels this season. He was much better with that yesterday, joining Savinho with the press on Hall well. , but still not to his usual standards. There have been times where Foden has looked like he’s strolled through games compared to how he used to be.

A bit like Ederson though, anyone can have an off-season in their career. Long-term Foden will be a cracking player for us. But it’s time for him to kick on again now (like he has in the past when people have thought he might have hit a ceiling), because we are going to go all out and try and sign De Bruyne’s replacement in the Summer and with Musiala signing a new contract at Bayern, it looks like it’ll be Wirtz we try and sign.

Foden will need to improve again.

He had a good game. Looked lively again. Linked up well with savinho a few times.

Foden was better yesterday in some aspects. He still needs to find shame. Eddy is outpacing him in assists this year in prem lol.

Foden has 4 assists in all compets so far, half those of Nunes (!). For some strange reason, he isn't as creative as he is supposed to be. Both Savinho and Nunes have assisted much more Haaland goals than Foden. Even last season he wasn't great at creating chances. Rodri contributed more assists despite playing much deeper than Foden. He should get better at it, as a new creative player like Wirtz might make it difficult for him. Having signed Marmoush, now we are less dependent for goals on Foden. We'll need more his creative ability and also hard work off the ball.

Last year he played more as a second striker, so not too surprising with his chance creating dropping.

I do want to caution using assists as a metric for creativity.

You need to use expected assists, chances created or shot creating actions.

For example, Foden has 2 assists in the league, but the stats say he should have 5.

He might have some serious competition from Echeverri very soon....hopefully it inspires him to a greater level of performance because although there is no doubting his ability, his work rate seems to have dropped off this season.

His benchmark is last season.

linked up great with Savinho on Saturday, should have had an assist with Savinho and he played the ball to Gundogan and Savinho for the goals they assisted. I thought he played well and he picked the right passes
