Pep Guardiola - 2024/25

I think this summer is huge for us in terms of how serious we are to get back to the top table and kick every other fucker off it.

I agree with everyone who has rightly said that football is cyclical, but you can definitely manipulate the length of those cycles with clever squad planning and clever transfers. I would like to see City make this off cycle as short as possible and to do that we are going to need to be brutal in the summer. Too many lax, half arsed performances last night, I can always handle losing if we've give it our all, but I reckon we didnt give 50% and thats what really stings about this one.

Sentimentality could set this club back years if we are not careful. I'd like to see a return of the Pep of 8-10 years ago. He didn't give a fuck who you were or what you had done, if you didn't work for him, you were out. We need that back.

too much comfort for bad performance due to loyalty. but loyalty to past it players?

there was a reason Real Madrid offloaded Varane, Casemiro back in summer of 2021 for serious amounts. then they went through quite spectacular drop of performance at the rags. Real knew whats coming for them and decided to cash in while they could despite those two were very important for them for long years.

we on the other side offering new deals to Gundogan, if Walker didnt ask to leave he would still be here two more years etc...

No Im supprting Pep against the idiots who want him gone.....while pointing out that he has made a mistake in not wanting a rebuild - but that he wont have been on his own in that decision.
No one is perfect - not even Pep - but he is allowed to make mistakes and deserves like all of our legends to decide whether he wants the time to rebuild or not....I think (and hope) he will
I haven't seen many want him out, just genuinely question what is going on currently. Not seeing KDB was done is on him, not starting the rebuild last summer is on him. Not planning accordingly regarding Rodri is on him. Our formation, set up, boring slow style of football is on him.

He has brought us success we will never see again, he has been an absolute joy managing us and I hope he can find that desire and eagerness to go again, find solutions and innovate as he has done previously. He deserves every plaudit for what he has brought us, but on the same level he needs to be held accountable too.

we have plenty to sell/release in the summer.....thats where the club need to be really proactive right from the start.
KDB
Gundo
Grealish
Walker
Bernardo
Nunes
Phillips (eventually off the books)
one of Stones/Ake
Sell acadmey players as well

This will save so much in wages and we can then hopefully get 4 quality replacements in.
I agree that the high wages will help, but there’s not too much in transfer fees in there! And, “4 quality replacements” will demand every penny of $1M/month in wages themselves.

really hope he brings reinforcement into his backroom stuff for new ideas, new eyes, just some new impulse etc.
Lillo sleeping on the bench next to him got to stop.

best would Gundogan to join the staff and then he is out of the playing squad...
Fernandinho or Zabaleta could come back too.

Does anyone think the way the game is going doesn't suit his philosophy?
The game is dominated by pace and power now, I think he'd need to review his coaching staff and typical choice of player to get back to the top.

Whilst I like the idea of some legends coming back, your first point about new eyes is important - we probably need someone more likely to bring new ideas & challenge Pep's thinking. Feel having ex city players could be more of the same

Yes. The game changed.
Tika-taka is not the winning strategy anymore.

Spot on.

The drama around our performance and results are because bad news about City sells.

I don't remember Real having this after their 4-0 drubbing. We mauled them that night and then they won the CL the next season.

The dippers won the league then fell off a cliff. They spent time out of the CL. They rebuilt and are a good side again.

We have gone up against a side who throw a fortune at players and have some of the best in the world. You can talk about how cheap Valverde was but their stature means they can get players for cheap as they live off their names and pay huge wages.

We are a few players off getting right back to the top, but we also rely on those we have bought to develop fast and deliver more consistently.

And Pep is the best manager on the planet to deliver that.
Agreed.

Some are too quick to doubt Pep. His biggest mistake has been to rely on crocked defenders. The injuries to our CBs have been as detrimental as Rodri's absence.

Given the combination of all injuries plus Foden's catastrophic loss of form, Walker's problems and departure, and the aging of several midfielders, it's incredible that we are currently top 4, only 3 pts off top 3. Chances are we'll be much better next season IF we solve the problem with having unreliable defenders. If we repeat the same mistake, next season is likely to be disappointing too.

Dropping up to 6 midweek champions league games going forward is huge for us in terms of fitness, recovery and match preparation. A luxury in fact.

But MOST important in my mind is that Pep is about to start the largest block of coaching time in his career. 12 league games only + FA Cup in the 14 weeks left until the end of the season. Giving him so much opportunity to integrate the new and young players with the ones a bit older. Perfect - what he loves most. Coaching quality young players.

The 28 and younger squad looks like this:

Echeverri 19
Reiss 19
Simpson-Pusey 19
O'Reilly 19
Lewis 20
Savio 20
Khusanov 20
Mcatee 22
Doku 22
Gvardiol 23
Nic0 23
Haaland 24
Foden 24
Marmoush 26
Nunes 26
Dias 27
Rodri 28

Some of those will be going on loan but add to that signings in the summer and we'll be very strong again.

AND then, with an eye on next season, he has another 3 to 4 week training camp in the States with the Club World Cup.

The future is very bright IMO and it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if we finish 3rd in the league, win the FA Cup and have a good run in the Club World Cup.

Won't be long before we are saying pep is the greatest again...
