Liverpool (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

They are a hardworking team who happen to have two, Salah & Van Dijk, world class players who are still at the top of their. game. In some ways they need to win the league this year as it will be the last chance for both of them. Salah will be of to Saudi and Van Dijk is 34 in the summer and central defenders don't win titles.
League is going to be wide open next season.
Excellent post.

On Wednesday I commented how Real Madrid defended in a 442 and we defended with a 2. Today Liverpool defended in a really well drilled 5 4 1 and we defended horribly. We weren’t going to score today if we’d played until midnight. It was a really disappointing performance. Doku and Savinho ok, Foden, KDB, Gvardiol, Lewis all terrible.

Major squad surgery required this summer,
What if you add Stones, Rodri, Echeverri and Haaland to that team. Suddenly Doku and Savinho would have a top class striker to hit.

I'll be honest with you. It wasn't a pass back.
i was sat 10th row in family stand. it looked like a pass back to me. even allison only parried it at first till he saw taylor waving his arms turning down all the family stand who appealed, then he caught it

I am hoping that Liverpool renew Salah and VVD's contracts.

Since CL final…4 games v Arsenal no wins, 4 games v Liverpool no wins, 4 games v Madrid no wins, games v Inter again & PSG no wins…14 games v top sides…not a single win.....says a lot about us last 18 months or so.
Even more baffling that Pep thought we were ok for another seaosn. The wheels have been falling off for 18 months

The standards we set were so high, that at the moment even fairly good performances are deemed rubbish or unacceptable by some ‘fans’.

No perspective, no empathy, no understanding.
I understand but I'm sick of seeing teams sitting back letting us pass it around and conceding possession and then scoring against us on the break with our defence in panic mode and looking like amateurs.
We seem to constantly fall for it so much that I now expect it.
Why can we not change tactics?

You reckon that was "fairly good"?
No matter who's perspective or personna I take on, I'm struggling with that.
They let us have it knowing we’ll lose it and turn it over with a poor touch or sloppy pass and they can break. We were shit. Never looked like troubling them and just played right in to their hands.

We are lacking sharpness in every department bar savinho and khusanov. Hiw many misplaced passes? How many poor controls making the second Touch a tackle?

That was mid table football. If you think that’s good then fair enough, but we won’t be winning anything playing like that.

Liverpool won without getting out of 2nd gear. Conceding possession in the middle third knowing that our glacial side-to-side build-up wasn’t going to hurt them, and without Haarland there was no focal point in attack. Whether it’s injuries, age, familiarity or flawed tactics (probably a bit of each) we’re far too easy for good teams to play against at the moment.

I thought it was fair in the circumstances. We played in Madrid on Wednesday and were without Haaland and Stones, on top of Rodri. And we murdered their full backs. Nothing came from that but in some respects we did play well.

You have to account for the problems facing City. We were well beaten but if you take the background, you can say we did OK

Yup. That’s just in one game too. We know the problems we’ve got, they’re not going to get sorted until the summer. We’ll have games still hopefully like against Newcastle but even after that, we immediately got injuries to not try that player combination again.

Just got to focus now on building those players that are going to be with us next season and instead of castigating them after every game, be grateful of the others for the contributions they’ve made to us over the last few years.

Four in a row, including a treble, and before that the centurions season. These are legends of our club that it’s been one too many a season for. I can more than allow them that and completely get why Peps been sentimental with them.

The results don’t matter the rest of this season. Just got to enjoy the long farewell and be grateful to both them for what they’ve done and also knowing we will rebuild and be back quickly.

Personally I’m feeling equally nostaligic and excited for the future right now and both of those are ultimately good feelings :)

Exactly. That's how far the drop off chasm has become.
The quality we have had to be at to play them over recent seasons (losing frequently), but at least bringing the best out in them. Today they just toyed with a dead mouse.
Some of the takes on here about who had good games etc. are as concerning and as unsophisticated as our performance.

Some serious squad surgery needed in the summer for sure.

We've not been helped though by more fucking injuries. We can't catch a break at the moment.

2 weeks ago we looked like we had (bar Rodri) everyone back then down go Akanji, Dias, Haaland, Grealish and Bobb.

OK only Haaland and Dias are guaranteed starters in the above mentioned, but with the others out too, the squad depth is so thin. The squad depth is further highlighted by fullback options in the sense that bar Rico, we don't actually have any apart from Academy players.

Without good squad depth nobody is putting pressure on anyone in the starting XI who has a bad game. So today, players like Rico, Foden, Gvardiol, Savinho - they'll probably start the next game even though they were shite today becuae there's nobody good enough to take their spot.

Summer is huge and it might take longer than we think to rebuild this team. I wouldn't be surprised of it took until Guardiolas last year to get us back the top. What were seeing now is the biggest overhaul of the squad in Pep's era. It may take time folks...
