125 caps in the best Spanish team ever. 4th highest goal scorer in their history. And he played his prime years for us. We were blessed. Not a moment's trouble on or off the pitch - no prima donna antics with Merlin. Shunned publicity outright. Don't think we'll see his like again.

They simply don’t exist. He was a one off like Messi and Ronaldo. A very unique player both in terms of ability and personality, and as Stan Bowles says above, he chose to spend the prime of his career here with us.

I am just really gutted he never got to have that final game farewell that he deserved.

you are right, an absolute genius, if David was playing you felt secure he was going to run the match, an amazing ability to make everyone around him play better, loved him

Never spoken about in terms of Premier League greats, but he absolutely was one of the best ever.

If he only he'd been able to shoot properly...
 
Just talking about this, makes me realise, if I didn't already know, how much really stupendous football we've been privileged to see over the past fourteen years of so. Go back to Yaya's winning goal against the rag bullies at Wembley, then take it from there. Hell, take Yaya's absurd goal against Villa at the end of the 13-14 season. Or Sergio's goal against the rags, when the pass was actually behind him, and he somehow hooked it in, at the beginning of the same season.
I don't know if it will continue, the future is dark, although the rebuild is in the pipeline, but I just feel like someone who's seen attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion…

Actually, I've had neutral fans and at least one rag — old school fans, who know the game — casually say to me that he was one of their favourite players to watch. In the case of the rag (not a mate, but a pretty sound bloke) he said to me he was his favourite player in the league.
