Spurs (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

great result. The 1st half was really decent, bar the finishing, i think we could/should have been out of sight. Doku was tremendous that half. 2nd we saw the re-emergence of the lacklustre sloppy City, the one we fear, and i think the pattern is set; we need to be getting our goals and then digging in. Spurs really should have put away one of their chances, they had some very strong ones. Khusanov continues to impress.

on the disallowed goal; the thing that winds me up most is the ref making a decision so long after. If doesn't decide there and then - the very premise refs work on for every second of every game - then he is not sure and has decided to let the game carry on.

The ref blew 7 seconds after the incident, you can hear a whistle as the players run off to celebrate. Also you can see he slips over while watching the 'incident' and i wonder if he's bottled it and sent it upstairs due to that.

That's the thing. Referees have always guessed to an extent, but now we have a system that is supposed to take guesswork out of the equation. Yet when a referee guesses one way or the other now, as they are encouraged to do, it shifts the burden of proof: last night, for example, from "innocent" until proven "guilty" to "guilty" until proven "innocent". As I said, a mess.

Three new players are getting used to the demands of the domestic game, but the others are also having to make a transition in the way we play. We've had season after season of high press and containing the opponent in their half, which meant much less running. Now, however, we're having to shuttle up and down the park on an almost continuous basis, and the players' bodies are just not used to it. Could be that we have to do a lot more stamina work in pre-season now and that is the same for the academy teams, too.
Our players will get a decent pre season??!!

Good point. I suppose that many of the first-team will have to build stamina ‘on the job’, but there’s no reason why the development players are not conditioned.

Of course, if the attacking players were more clinical and put games to bed, as they should, the rest wouldn’t have burning lungs.

A great fewer number of mistakes last night and at least two outstanding saves for Ederson certainly makes a difference. I didn’t get that feeling that if we were to concede we’d concede again and again. Anyone else feel the same ?

My ERO texted me presumably after watching MotD and sez it was as much a handball by the Spurs player as much as Haaland. Funny how VAR couldn't see anything. The way VAR is implemented can't be described as anything other than a stitch up at times.

Edit: just seen it. The Spurs player has a game of netball before it gets to Haaland. Fuckin' pen if he didn't score.

Yeah we end up taking too long to win games and set them in concrete.

1st half we were great bar the finishing. Game should of been out of sight. 2nd half was laboured, wonder if we ran out of legs. Spurs also made some tactical and player changes. Thought Nico & Marmoush were not really in the game. Josko, Khusanov, Eddie, Nunes & Doku were outstanding. Lets hope the main lads get a good rest and we are able to put a team out to beat Plymouth without relying on some of the key players.

On a side note, I've been impressed with Spurs Archie Gray and Spence every time I've seen them play.

anyone notice (maybe its just me mind being paranoid) that we seem to get blown for offside straight away, whilst others against us, dont?? how many have we seen stones and Co sprinting back and lunging into last ditch tackles risking injury only for the linesman to then put his bastard flag up!??!! or is it just me being a knob??

I mentioned this a few weeks back. We only get the flag when Eddie has had a set of size 12 studs welded onto his rib cage.

It's not excellent if it doesn't result in a shot. It might be good, it might even be great, but it's not excellent.
But it did end up in a shot a few times..the way we played at times was fantastic..much better than we have for a while...
I enjoyed our 1st half performance..second half we dug in and they didn't score so all's well

It will be like the explanation for the Young non-penalty we saw at the weekend. VAR could only look at the decision made by the referee which was a penalty against Maguire for holding and overturn it. They couldn't give a penalty for the shirt pulling by de Ligt because he wasn't penalised by the referee but they could show the incident and let the referee make his own mind up. I don't know how long that has been a rule, but it's a coincidence it was applied favourably to United. I don't know how often a pitch side review leads to a referee maintaining his original decision, but it's also a coincidence that it favoured United this time.

Last night, they will say they couldn't look at the defensive handballs because that wasn't the decision given by the referee. It will be interesting to see if the referee checked for defensive handballs in his pitch side review, but it's a coincidence all this penalised City.

Is it any wonder people are falling out of love with the game when such convoluted, dogmatic rules are spoiling perfectly good goals? What a mess.

It's a simple game but ridiculous rules are draining it of its enjoyment.
"convoluted, dogmatic rules are spoiling perfectly good goals? What a mess."

This is a perfect description and applies to both the hand ball rules and the use of VAR.

The "clear and obvious" principle for a start is inherently flawed. One man's clear and obvious is another man's murky and obscure.

It could be so much simpler.

I think we're getting our stuff together now. IMO we'll finish second

Good first half performances across the team.

We should've been 4.0 up at half time & not killing the game kills us later in the game.

Kush was excellent, along with Nunes,Eddie & Dok.

A bit of a freshen oop for Saturday, then get into a battle at Notts.
