I agree with that. The difference is that Birmingham really were the real thing, an absolutely fearsome mob, who didn’t need to be attacking normal supporters. Villa have always wanted to be Birmingham in that sense, the epitome of wannabes, trying to prove something, hence you have always had a higher risk factor at Villa as a normal non hooliganism fan. Let’s not forget a Villa bloke in his forties assaulting a kid at Wembley after our League Cup win against them, sums them up.
Birmingham is the only time I have experience problems travelling to the Etihad. From Birmingham upwards we would get Birmingham fans in cars and coaches giving us hand signals and mouthing abuse at us. The only time I wished I had taken my City stickers of the car !.
We took of our City gear when using the service stations.
I remember the police helicopter flying around as the match was going on. Walking back to the car after the match, some Birmingham fans were covered in blood and seemed to be wanting to fight anyone even themselves lol.
Never had it that bad before or after when travelling to matches.
