Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Was it really a set up? These whitehouse visits by foreign leaders seem to follow a set format - actual discussions happen prior or behind closed doors; pretend discussion staged in front of the press in the oval office, then final press conference with both parties putting a nice bow tie on things (as per macron and Starmer).
Obviously what we just saw was a departure from this, but I don't for a second believe we were watching something spontaneous.
It's either a way for zelensky to bow out with pride intact in the face of a sell out of Ukraine, or he had gone toe to toe with trump over the mineral rights and demanded more in return than trump will give (not unreasonable). Either way we were treated to showbiz rather than a public spat.
I sincerely believe this was stage managed by Trump (in cohorts with Putin). Trump always knew Zelensky would not sign the minerals deal without security guarantees and Trump being Trump, still invited him to the Whitehouse thinking he could change his mind.

When Zelensky held firm, plan b was initiated by Vance

Totally agree. It was a bit of a master stroke in my opinion. Very clever tactic indeed and will most certainly ensure the US get a better minerals deal….whilst appeasing those maga nutters.

I also think that someone in Zelensky’s team should have realised the mood music had changed in the US post election and had him change his approach to these things….maybe dressing and sounding like a statesman would have helped in that..amongst other things.

This is exactly what happened.

Do you think Donald Trump dresses and sounds like a statesman?

I have seen that tactic a couple of times in contract negotiations. Both times, whilst successful in the short term it did long term damage to the relationship. Trump wont care about that though, he probably thinks Zelenski is a 'dead man walking' politically. Something very sinister is at play here. What the fuck has Putin got on Trump.

They are sharing the same basic philosophy,

that is the Law of the stronger one (or Law of the jungle).

Everything is derived from that:

leading by strength,
imperialist policy,
seeing minorities as weak victims like lgbtq,
in the consequence fighting democracy, women rights (men are stronger!) and humanist ideas.

Therefore he adores other strong systems = autocracies, like ruzzia.

He can do his dirty "deals" without respect for any ethical values or rules.

Wait til handicapped people are called "unworthy life" as cost a lot of money and it's a little step to eutanasia and social Darwinism.

That’s not point though is it. If I had the begging bowl out I’d make sure to put on more of a show and at least try and win the media war. He was completely out manoeuvred…not his fault per se but someone in his team should have set him up better to battle these guys.

We are not seeing anything particularly new, except for the crass way trump handles diplomacy (if you can even call it that) The US have always been very transactional with their foreign policy but it's usually dressed up a bit better for public consumption. A better diplomat would have kept the focus on the bravery of the Ukrainians and described the post war commercial agreements as 'reconstruction' etc.

Zelenskyy is a crook. The Ukraine has already received $500 billion in cash from the US alone. A $1.5 billion has found its way a media company he owns, to apparently deal with "reminding the world that the Ukraine is still at war".
There are a lot of people making a lot of money out of this conflict. The minerals rights is not open ended, the yanks want there $500 billion back. That's the public slant, the reality is that a group companies are aiming to retrieve them.
As for Russia invading Europe, they have shown that their military is woefully short on capable leaders, troops and equipment.
