Battle for the Falklands by Max Hastings is a superb read and insight to the Falklands conflict and start by giving the reader a reasonable grasp of the incredibly long running history and battle for control between us and Argentina.

The British government and intelligence where fully aware of Argentine plans at the time, they just chose to ignore them as they felt the Argentinian government would never go through with it was the issue and likewise, the Argentinians felt that we and the world opinion/UN wouldn’t do what we did to take them back.

Back to Trump.
Sort of says what I was trying to say

3 day week was 1973-74 under Ted Heath. Presumably bins overflowing means the Winter of Discontent, which was late 1978 to February 1979? Thatcher got elected in May 1979 so had nothing to do with either of those (although she was in government for the 3 day week).

The defeat of the strike to the closure of most coal mines, a deindustrialisation of the economy, rampant privatisation of nationalised industries, the dismantling of organised labour, rapidly growing unemployment, the hollowing-out working-class communities, and a steady increase in social inequality in British society, whilst encouraging in a belief within the Tory party that austerity was the best way forward.

She oversaw the effective end of twentieth-century industrial Britain which led inexorably to the ushering in of twenty-first century Britain, characterised by speculative capitalism, the dismantling of workers’ protections, castigating anyone more unfortunate than the well off as scroungers and frauds whilst also encouraging the rise of the gig economy.

So, all in all, as toxic a legacy as you could hope for….
Great post.

Haltbakk Bunkers are a Norwegian company that re-fuel US Navy ships, or they did. They have cancelled their contract- From their face book account:

"Today we have witnessed the greatest 'sh*t show' ever presented live on television, by the current American president and his vice president. Huge credit to the president of Ukraine for restraining himself and for keeping calm even though the USA put on a backstabbing TV show. It made us sick. Short and sweet."

There is a lot of negativity around America and Americans at the moment. I have been guilty of it myself as the behaviour of their leadership is absolutely soul destroying. But, I have just seen below and it reminded me that while good people still exist, there is still hope. It's not all Americans who are the problem. We just have to hope there is enough of them who object and have a voice.

All the action i have seen are similar to what I expect during a backdoor meeting.

Nothing changes here. Get the fucking deal done and end the war. Everything else, is just performative nonsense.

And that includes sll the whaling and whining here.
What deal?

This is why Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson should run for President. Or, hell, fine -- I'd take Cena. Or even the Undertaker.

Why didn't they take a picture with John Cena?

There's no deal on the table, even a doofus like you knows that.

Trump and Vance parrot the Putin line that Ukraine is on its arse, that they've lost the war, they're dead, done, a corpse still standing only because it's propped up by the West, primarily the USA. One only has to threaten to kick the prop away and Ukraine will accept whatever surrender terms Putin and Trump desire.

But Trump over played his hand. Now, as never before in the post war world, Europe alone is uniting to face a common enemy. The UK, France and Germany are the main drivers, but with the exception of Hungary, all of Europe is looking at ways to prop up Ukraine for at least two years, while they cobble together their own security backstop, we're looking at the beginnings of a European army in all but name.

Right now the lines to Ankara must be clogged with European leaders sweet talking Erdogan, if he can be persuaded to throw his weight behind this he can name his price.

Things will move very quickly now, as a Brit and a European I feel a sense of excitement that something good might be forged out of this terrible situation.

Trump says he wants to Make America Great Again, but it seems the oaf might have inadvertently started the process of making Europe Great Again.
I agree - I think the UK has landed on its feet with this as it gives an 'in' with Europe after voting to leave (not that we necessarily re-join).

It should be long time before we look towards our West for competency or political governance again.........
