Was thinking this myself the other day. A unified European fighting force was widely seen in the right wing press a decade or so ago, as an even further circle of hell than political union, which I never quite got. It makes absolute strategic sense for Europe to have a common military, as it did at the time of the Brexit vote in 2016. It’s not like the threat from Russia is anything new.

No one could have predicted the way things would turn in under a decade, although that’s sort of the point. Why narrow your national options in a way that simply wasn’t necessary?

There was clearly an assumption by nearly everyone who voted in the referendum, leave or remain, that the trans-Atlantic alliance was immutable, and I wonder how differently the vote would have turned out, without any other variables whatsoever, if people had known the scope of the deterioration of US conduct towards Europe and especially the UK at the time of the referendum.

A lot of what he does is distraction.

People are talking about Canada, Greenland and Ukraine. They are not talking about Kash Patel and the FBI.

It’s an excuse to invade I’m convinced of it, destroy Europe/nato by siding with Russia and then when we are too busy roll into Canada and Greenland. I think the only ones who can stop him now is the democrats talking to the military, they must have some that are sensible. This is all going to spiral out of control very soon, his rhetoric in Gaza is going to piss the Middle East off, he’s having a go a China and Europe could end up at war very soon if we are not careful.

Would the US military actually go along with invading Canada?! Surely that would just be so bat shit crazy most would refuse.
 
I wonder if other countries have thought about knocking Trump off themselves, he’s obviously now a clear and present danger to the whole world, I’m sure there are some very capable people, I mean it just takes something to be put in a Big Mac.

All the countries that would consider assassination are now on his side.
 
That's one person though. The bulk of the US army wouldn't execute something as deranged as invading Canada. A lot them will have friends and family north of the border.

This is unprecedented. We are supposedly the closest ally of the US, yet we aren't in the EU anymore. It's almost an impossible position to be in politically.

I imagine plenty of people in government are having sleepless nights about how we as a country navigate this.

Personally I think we need to rejoin the EU asap, with the promise that we will be at the forefront of a European military alliance with Britain and France guaranteeing a nuclear deterrent for the rest of the countries.
