Elon Musk

Looks like they’re doing some dodgy shit. One Tesla dealership in Canada somehow claims to have sold 1,200 behind on January 11th, two days before the tax rebate scheme was announced to be paused and then stopped. In total across four dealerships, $43m in rebates was claimed on that day.

It is greed that will hopefully be their undoing.

Probably starting to feel the hate

It's a characteristic of modern life that people want power without taking accountability for exercising it. If I had a penny for every company I've been in where people get to make decisions whilst being able to offload any bad consequences onto others, or create stufficient confusion that no one ends up accountable. You could argue it's always been thus, but imo it's got much worse in the last few decades. You see it in public life where standards are too often in the toilet. There's more than one strata of society who think they can act with impunity and get away with anything.

Tesla has $2bn of deposits on its balance sheet.

These include small value down payments for the roadster and cyber truck. Deposits taken all over the world. Tesla doesn't appear to be making the roadster and the cyber truck is only available in the US. It needed to fudge the safety rules to get to market there and won't get that kind of help elsewhere.

So they are sat on all these deposits where they won't ever sell a car. It's a bit culty. Crypto bros happy to hand over cash for nothing. Some might ask for their money back but its odd to say the least. This is not how any other car company would operate.

Is this good or bad for Tesla and Musk?

Seems bad but you know, I’m easily confused.

  • Tesla sales in Germany plunged by 59.5% in January 2025 and 76.3% in February.
  • In Australia, the EV maker’s deliveries dropped 65.5% in the first two months of 2025.
  • Tesla’s February 2025 sales in China fell 49.16%, signaling a market share decline.
Tesla was proudly proclaiming less than a year ago that it would be selling 20 million electric vehicles annually by 2030. Fast forward to today, and things have taken a sharp downturn. After seemingly abandoning this lofty goal mid-2024, the company has also seen its first annual sales decline in a decade. Now, Tesla’s sales are continuing to slide in several major markets, including Germany, Australia, and, of course, China.

Earlier this week, we reported that Teslasales in Norway collapsed by 44.4% through January and February, despite the country’s overall EV market growing by 53.4%. Things are even worse in Germany. New data from the KBA – Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority – shows that in January 2025, Tesla sales plummeted by 59.5%, with just 1,277 new cars registered in the country.

The situation only worsened in February. Sales were down a staggering 76.3% compared to February 2024, with just 1,429 units sold. Through January and February, Tesla has delivered 2,706 vehicles in Germany, marking a massive 70.6% drop from the same period last year. Tesla’s decline is even more pronounced when you consider that overall BEV sales in Germany climbed 30.8% in February.

Australia isn’t much better. Data from the nation’s Electric Vehicle Council shows that Tesla shifted 1,592 vehicles in February, a massive 71.9% decline from the 5,665 sold in February 2024. Through the first two months of the year, Tesla delivered 2,331 vehicles to Australians, a 65.5% decline from the 6,772 vehicles sold over the same two months in 2024.

It’s worth mentioning that the highly anticipated, heavily updated Model Y has just started being sold in Australia—though only in the premium (A$73,400) Launch Edition variant, with the standard version still unavailable. So, the sales slump isn’t entirely surprising.

Even so, the outgoing Model Y saw a 55.4% decline, shifting only 924 units. Meanwhile, sales of the refreshed Model 3 are down a dramatic 81.4%, with just 668 cars sold. It seems Australians aren’t quite as eager to embrace the “Tesla dream” as they once were.

I can see anything Musk touches consumer wise and possibly the Starlink stuff failing spectacularly, he’s seen to be a Nazi now and the threats might work in USA but he doesn’t have the same control over politicians in the rest of the world, he will never be penniless but his net worth will start to drop rapidly I suspect, let him pour his money in trying to go to mars that won’t end well.

Ket is one helluva drug.

He failed to get the AFD in full power and top Farage for Tommy Robinson - maybe now sees Europe as a lost cause for him, hence America ready to turn their backs on us

Wouldn't surprise me if it gets worse from here.

That data is mostly covering 3 months to end Feb. Some of it is sales in Feb but it can take a wile for a car sale to go through and these buyers would have been shopping around late last year. Musks peak arsehole period is right now. He's more toxic than ever. So I'd imagine Tesla showrooms are deserted right now.

There is also a delayed impact of the second hand market. Tesla need a healthy used market so they can part ex the cars for new buyers. If they can't shift the older cars coming in then it's harder to do deals on new cars.

Shareholders must be chuffed.

Tesla seems totally screwed so long as Elon is associated with the company.

Why?

Well... who on earth buys Teslas in the first place? It sure as hell isn't your radical right wing nutjob who doesn't believe in climate change, even if he can afford to purchase the car. It's by-in-large centrists/liberals - who are buying electric as a personal commitment to combat climate change.

Now that Elon is a radical right-wing nationalist, he's created a big dilemma for prospective Tesla purchasers - buy a great electric car even though the purchase benefits a repulsive MAGA figure who is responsible for dismantling/crippling numerous vital American agencies, or purchase some other electric vehicle.

And it's even worse... current owners of Tesla are horrified with their purchase, because ownership of Teslas is associated with support for Musk and all he stands for. So numerous Tesla owners are now trying to sell their vehicles, even at discount. And this, in turn, helps further cripple new Tesla sales.
===
As an aside, 4 months or so I posted in this forum about Musk's alignment with MAGA and the negative impact I thought this might have on Tesla sales. And several posters poo-poo-ed the idea - that self interest and the fact that Tesla makes the best electronic vehicles outweighs any negative association with Musk. Well... I told you so.

I’m doing my big for Tesla car sales. Only on Friday, I got beside one and gestured if they were a Nazi. They chased me for a while until they realised they were using too much battery so skulked off to the 3rd lane, blocking traffic again.

Keeps me amused during the shit commute.
