US Tariff War

Donald Trump has said he will double his planned tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminium from 25% to 50%.

He said the increase in the tariffs set to take effect on tomorrow as the trade war between the two countries intensifies.

"I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to add an ADDITIONAL 25% Tariff, to 50%, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM CANADA, ONE OF THE HIGHEST TARIFFING NATIONS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD," Trump posted on Truth Social.

Yesterday, Ontario announced it would be charge 25% more for electricity to 1.5 million American homes and businesses.

Canada's most populous province provides electricity to Minnesota, New York and Michigan.

The US stock market promptly fell following the post.
So those stocks will drop, then amazingly he will call them off and all his mates will have bought up cheap stick and let it rise again, rinse and repeat.

Komical Karoline repeating the lie that tariffs are a tax on other countries.

And then crying that the AP journo is questioning her knowledge of economics.

The fuckwit.

The penny will only drop with the cult members as and when the tariffs hit their pockets.

Until then, there will be this perpetual cycle of tariffs applied, tariffs withdrawn with stock market fluctuations and press officers trying to justify what’s happening.

Leavitt's elderly husband is a real estate developer so she'll be learning who pays tariffs soon enough.

I saw that, and what are you left to think?

Is 1984 their playbook? it would seem so. Forget the evidence of your eyes and ears. That is the new command.

She isn't a fuckwit, she knows full well she is spouting bullshit, but that's politics today, and the sad thing is the hard of thinking lap it up.

Half the people in America believe it, and her Glorious Leader, the man who loves the uneducated, thinks she's a wonderful woman doing a great job. A great and wonderful woman. She's amazing, and doing a great job.

Sad times.

When have you not known a whitehouse press officer 'spout bullshit' and support the presidents policies/views? That is literally her job. Do you honestly expect her to mount some sort of student protest on behalf of upset democrats on the whitehouse lawn?

There seems to be a lot of posturing on tarrifs with yet another climb down on the retaliatory electricity ones from Canada and the hike to 50% on others by the US. It will probably all calm down eventually.

FWIW I don't expect her to mount a student protest on behalf of anyone, and I fully expect her to support the current administrations policies.

Have you ever known a whitehouse press secretary spout obvious lies (not bullshit, lies) and not get criticised for it?

Yes, Ari Fleischer for one.

If the US became less dependent on China, i'd be ecstatic.

But hey, to each their own

Didn't think you were the type that would just believe slogans blindly without analyzing them.

Personally I have a feeling in the next 4 years China will invade Taiwan and we are going to see an absolute blood bath in the global economy and the US will be fucked because of the orange clown.

Biden at least saw that coming and put in the CHIPS Act to get some chip foundries set up in the states before that happens.

But since MAGA and Trump are hell bent on destroying anything done by dems.. we either:

1. get dragged into a war to protect Taiwan (for their chips) or

2. accept the US won't be the world's greatest economy anymore considering that Tech companies are basically 40% of the US economy.

BTW how come MAGA supports so many H1B's instead of American workers.. sounds kinda stupid to MAGA when you're just letting migrants take the tech jobs over Americans.

I think we worry too much about china starting wars. The only one I remember in the last 50 years was for about a month in Vietnam in 1979. The US and UK seem to be more likely to start a war.

But she promised to tell the truth. Either she lied and is lying, or she's as dumb as Trump.

(Sorry - for a minute I thought you might have been making a serious point.)

I just have this image of trucks and ships at border posts and ports, waiting for these windows of time when the tariffs are on or off. More flip flops than Blackpool beach.
Storms in the Atlantic delayed a ship carrying British steel, so the importer has to pay a 25% tariff - or tells the ship not to dock until Trump cancels the tariff. (When the UK accepts a trade deal for hormone-treated beef?)

This is hard to judge because I think you're missing that China didn't really exist as a major power until 40 years ago.

It remains to be seen what they'll do militarily but they've gone from not having a military 40 years ago to one that is now the second most tooled up in the world.

The invasion of Taiwan is an obvious one that could happen one day as it's a state Chinese goal to bring Taiwan under China. The blocker to that has been the US and as much as Trump seems to be more pro-Russia I'm not so sure it's the same for the Chinese.

I agree trump does seem more anti-china, but if you take past behaviour as an indicator of future behaviour (as we all seem content to do with Putin and trump) then China is more likely to buy/bribe it's way into Taiwan than invade it. As far as military build up in the Pacific goes, you could argue that China's is an appropriate response.

I think nothing will happen in trump's era, i mean next 4 years.
Many people said "2027", but now it seems like, it delay for 2 or 3 years. Who knows, nobody knows.
One more chance for those politicians in Taiwan.
Yes it's depends on America, taiwan is "one of the cards" in America's hand.
The only way for China to take it back , is...to win the direct war against America.
Now we just sitting down here ,waiting, and building , of course...

Her actual job is to push the line to take from the boss, not be an arbiter of the truth. If it is lies, then it's her job to push them and make them as plausible as possible. I don't know quite what else people are expecting - it's essentially a PR role, not a quality assurance or fact checking one.
