And here was me thinking Marmalade was a corruption of Mer Malade ie sea sickness => scurvy. Portuguese sailors were starved of vitamin C on long voyages, and relied on Marmelos to get their vitamin C to stop their teeth falling out. Marmelos was made out of quinces rather that oranges back then.

and there was me thinking the nickname "limeys" for british sailors came from whenever they landed in a country with citrus fruit the first thing the ship would do was stock up.
