Goalkeeper situation summer 25

Mile Svilar linked as well now. Dont think the paper have any idea tbh, seen about 10 names so far.

Well I dont see Pep giving the gloves to a a youngster like Chevalier and if he does then Ortega goes, which leaves us with another spot to fill. A tricky situation for sure.

Chevalier will be nearly 24 if he joins this summer, the same age Ederson was when he joined us.

He won't leave to become a number 2. This lad is ready to move, he is very good.

Ederson was 23 I think when he signed, same age

I am aware but when Ederson signed we were at the start of a new decade under Pep, he was willing to take the chance because of his freakish ability on the ball. Its worked well. Ederson had also already won titles with Benfica, played in the CL stages etc.

Similar total games played but Edersons at a higher standard.

As it stands, we are into Peps final years and at the minute its sinking like stone. Does Pep want to spend his next couple season bedding in a new youngster in goal?

Maybe I am wrong and perhaps Viana and Pep are embarking on a new found journey for the youngsters e.g. Reis and Khus but goalkeeper is one hell of a position to throw someone into.

Pep will influence the choice, but Viana will choose and he'll be looking beyond Pep. Besides Pep will just want the best available, if thats a 23 /24 year old don't think he be bothered.

Whoever we get, whether 23 or 39 it wont matter as said player will be getting bedded the next couple of years in the Pep tactics. Unless its a Barca prospect or someone from Pep's peuor stops. If its totally new guy, the bedding period is the same regardless of age

I agree tbf but it’s the kind of signing where he’d end up going to another top team and smash it and we’d end up spending £80m on someone like Donnaruma and he’d stink it up a la Claudio Bravo

A goalie doesn't need 2 years 'bedding in' and to learn Pep's tactics...certainly not to the extent an outfield player does....he needs to be able to pass the ball short/long (preferably to players in blue) and save some bloody shots!!

The rest (nuance's like his positioning without the ball but when we have possession) can be learned with a pre-season and on the fly.

And as for having a number 1 target of Meslier from Leeds....pray we don't go for him....seen him make no end of clangers over the years and that's from someone who has rarely watched them!

let Ortega go if he is throwing his toys out the pram again
Ortega did an interview last year that he basically said he’d never get it this good again. Like’s he’s trusted, gets cup minutes and will feature if he deserves to.

I initially thought if Eddie went and we bought in a clear 1st choice it would be the end for Ortega but I don’t think it will unless he has the perfect move lined up. He’s not leaving here where he’s had a great time and the best football of his career to risk it elsewhere in my opinion. He knows his role but also how important he is. Say we bring in a 23/24 year old he’ll be a great mentor for them as well.

One of the best squad players around.

After some research, i think we missed out on my #1 choice
1. Marmardashvili. Signed by Liverpool in the winter :(

2. Bart Verbruggen - Will be super expensive. But the player is be most interested in from Brighton

3. Illan Meslier Leeds: He is probably now my #1 choice.

4. Alex Remiro Real Sociedad.

5. Chevalier who might be going to PSG.

Any of the above works for me.
Meslier has had quite a few howlers.

Meslier is one of the worst keepers in the top two divisions. Constant mistakes leading to goals, no presence always seems nervous. Genuinely no idea how he keeps his spot at Leeds.

We could do with a Pavel Srnicek now.
Outstanding keeper who passed away at a very young age.

I thought he looked phenomenal the one time i saw him. Big, tall and massive presence. Seems I need to catch his shit games

Agree . If Leeds go up I expect them to sign ransdale who I think is a really good keeper who did nothing wrong at arsenal. ATM my fave keeper is pope at Newcastle.

Pope???
Honestly, I don't rate him highly at all. I think Martin Dúbravka is the better keeper.
Also his kicking makes Joe Hart look like prime Manuel Neuer.

Nah, Pope is way better than Dubravka. Pope would have had 50 England caps by now if it were about 10 years ago!

He's commanding and a great shot stopper. Garbage at playing out though, as you said, which is what holds him back now.

Speaking of Ramsdale, as someone did further up, I wonder a little if we end up needing 2 keepers whether he'd be one of them. Fee wouldn't be huge due to their relegation and he's homegrown, which we might really need to maximise our squad. If he'd be okay with being backup and obviously he ended up cast aside by Arsenal partly as he wasn't good enough with his feet. But for second choice could be ok.
