President Trump

I am not saying it's impossible or that I'm not apprehensive about some sort of crisis in the next four years. I am saying it's not nearly the inevitability it's being presented as, and there are many failsafes in place that have worked in the past and are likely to work again if they have to.

I knew someone would mention Obama. He wasn't black. It may be, to you, splitting hairs but I stand by what I said.
America will not see a black president in the next 20 years.

No black man will ever be allowed but a dark skinned self acclaimed black man with African heritage is fine. Makes sense.

I don’t think anyone’s saying it’s inevitable but what is inevitable is that he’ll try unless he dies in the meantime.

That centuries old no longer fit for purpose document they either swear upon and live by when it suits, or all work around and amend as an outdated piece of history when it also suits? Yeah, that one. The 'constitution'. Meaningless
As hyperbole goes, that’s up there with the best of it!

I can’t get my head round how complacent so many people are about this. Maybe the guardrails will hold, maybe they won’t, but there’s going to be an attempted takeover at some point, and any sane person should be on full alert that it could conceivably succeed. Ridiculous to suggest otherwise, even though I’d say it’s less than likely.

The fact it’s even remotely possible should give everyone grounds for grave concern.
It won’t happen

Trump will just keep doubting down on his authoritarian ideology, straight out of the Putin playbook, the difference is, you have millions of pissed of, & fast becoming ex-Trump supporters who are armed, some to the teeth.
The media are not reporting on the mass demonstrations all over the US, as soon as Trump goes full dictator & takes away the “freedoms” of his supporter base by declaring Martial law, it will get very ugly, he’ll be holed up in a bunker & on the phone to Putin, quicker than you can say Mig Mac, fries to go, who will obviously leave him high & dry in his own shit.

Allowed, you say. Who's actually going to say, "Mr President, you are not allowed to do that"? That's definitely working so far.
He is currently being sued by a whole raft of Democratic Party organisations in a suit led by Mark Elias and Democracy Docket. The basis of the suit is the EO purporting to introduce new rules in elections. Elias’s suit maintains that the executive have no power to make election rules. The Constitution gives that power to each individual state and to CONGRESS.
If you believe that it is important to the West and to the whole world that the most powerful democracy in the world sticks to the rule of law, sign up now to Democracy Docket (Google it). It is free.

I shouldn't be surprised if there is already a groundswell of unrest among Trump's ranks, but who can you honestly see being the first one to make that call 'we need to have a chat about the president...'

I don't know whether it's a global expression, but 'possession is 9/10ths of the law' doesn't work well in our favour, here

I'd be amazed.

They're all freaks or nonentities who wouldn't have the slightest chance of power under anyone else.

That's *why* Trump put them their - they owe their position entirely to him.

I asked the question of our US posters a few days back what would be their response to such an event and had no takers. Obvious reason for that is I'm a boring bastard asking boring questions, but I am surprised at the seeming level of confidence, implicit or explicit, that they and we will be able to ride this out eventually.

I think CB has alluded to a contingency plan to 'escape to the country'? Would make a more interesting episode than normal. "After 20 years in the city, Mr & Mrs Blue are looking for a ranch with sight lines of a least three miles in all directions and a bunker for 12, their budget is..."
