Your answer, unfortunately does not address the problem of the two main parties being incapable of dealing with Trump which was the basis of the question asked.

And no, I don't think Farage is the answer the Trump problem.

The US already has Independence Day, now they have Liberation Day. So, the burning question is, do they get the day off for BBQ and beers?

I suppose politically we are quite isolated.
The great British public took us out of Europe, China is not our mate, The Commonwealth want reparation, USA want Tariffs, We are quite alone and not very powerful, Alienating Trump even more than the Daft Twat is needs to be done with care.
We have a shitty hand and don't know how to play it, Fold ?
Unless we missed a trick with Rwanda -;(

Well, quite.

UK govt seems to be doing a decent job tactically, but that can only take us so far. Question is what's the strategy - continue to hedge on the fence, to align with US, or with Europe. It makes some sense in the short term not to be too strident on anything, but longer term anything other than a strong pivot to Europe is disastrous for us, I think.

So far Starmer is playing relations with America very well, however there will be a crux if we get hammered by Tarrifs and trade from Trump - that's why equally Starmer has led the way with Europe standing up to Russia. We are in a kind of sweet spot but also can all go down the pan. nervy times.
 
One legacy of Brexit - more by luck than judgement - is that we do at least have more wriggle-room than any individual EU nation, at this particular moment.

Not sure how it can be used, but at least that's something.

I'm not sure what you want the UK to do mate. I fully get that people are annoyed with Starmer due to some of the things that the government have done since he got in, but regarding Trump I think he's playing it as well as anyone can so far. We can't just simply tell him to fuck off even if we wanted to. Not being in the EU anymore gives us less clout with regards to tariffs than the EU have, hence the bolder tone coming out of the EU. If, as suspected, we don't escape the tariffs then I'd imagine we'll respond in kind.

Put another way, I dread to think what approach we'd be taking on this if Farage was in charge. He'd be so far up Trump's (and Putin's) arse. And as much as the Tories have done my head in over the past 5 years, I'd sooner have Sunak or even Johnson managing this situation than I would Farage.

It's a double edged sword; it also means that Trump can demand things of us the EU would be better able to stand up to. Like demanding we change our tax regime or abortion laws.

And if we go down that path it potentially blocks our ability to align to the EU, which has a hugely higher reward (because our trade with the EU is 3-4x higher or something like that)

I can't see us kowtowing to the extent that we'd even consider changing laws at his behest. Political suicide for whoever makes that decision.

I also believe that no country will be burning any permanent bridges by severing ties with US.

The next time there's a grown-up in the White House, they'll accept that this is an outlier period (let's pray, anyway) and welcome everybody back with open arms.

It's just whether we can survive to that point

It's been reported that we've proposed changing the digital services tax and we've been told the abortion protest exclusion zone is unacceptable to the US.

So it seems these things are already being considered.

Honestly, I think this hugely underestimates the significance of what's occuring. Things are never going to go back to how they were.

Just my opinion.
