Crazy when you look at the squads. Southampton are by no means good but some PL experience there and some exciting youngsters.
That Derby team were a championship side through and through and played like one every week. Worst squad I have ever seen in the Premier League. For that reason alone that record should never be broken.
Worrying though that all promoted sides are basically as hopeless as Derby every year now
The financial gap between the Premier League and the rest is growing. The parachute payments finding their way into the Championship are actually falling, while the TV revenues for Premier League clubs are increasing. Because the average time Championship clubs spend in the PL impact the payments - and that is going down every season with teams only having 1-2 years in the top flight.
It's currently about £40m for a relegated club's first season in the Championship, and all that does is offset reduced revenues, it doesn't allow for investment in the team. And to add to this, teams that go up can't then just throw a bunch of money at it because of PSR.
It's going to get worse. I've said it before, I wouldn't be surprised if we end up with what is effectively an "eternal 17" in the PL - unless one of the 17 completely collapses - staying in the Premier League is going to be like the old days of the Sky 4 being in the Champions League every season. A situation that only destabilised when we got involved and suddenly there wasn't enough places for everybody.
