The Chants Against Foden's Mum

Of course it is, protected characteristics apply to gender based abuse too.
Calling somebody a slag isn't discrimination based on the protected characteristics. Songs that are deemed homophobic will have action taken, same with tragedy chanting. Calling someone a slag isn't comparable with mocking deaths.

Can most of this be put down to roasting as in the comedy sense?

It's not nice but it's not meant to be, it's meant to unsettle players like slating in cricket I don't know if it works though.

It's only an offence if you sing it to a scouser.

I dont think he was poor because of the chants otherwise why he was equally poor in about 20 other games this season.

Have you seen Phil’s face when Pep hugged him at the end? That was the face of someone who is bothered. The players are only human after all and have feelings and no amount of money can stop that.
Which explains Pep passionate speech protecting Phil and calling out the rag cunts.

Is it gender based though? I’ve heard the term used against loads of blokes, including myself.

And I’ll happily admit that I was a bit of a slag in my early to mid thirties.

So how is it gender based?
We all know what they meant, and apart from London police shows it is generally a offensive term for loose women.

It is gender based insult in NW England, Rio Ferdinand got a 3 game ban for calling someone's mother a sket.

Agree to disagree, they wasn't discriminating against her gender, just the fact they believe her to be a slag.

it is deemed homophobic
But is "Chelsea Rent Boy" actually homophobic? Its a prostitution joke about the Chelsea player, not the sexual orientation itself. People can go all day arguing the semantics of chants which becomes another problem. The Premier League's stance looks to be shaky.

You either ban all defamatory chants or don't. Pick and chosing certain chants using flimsy legislation as seen in "Chelsea Rent Boy" which can be argued that it does not attack a protected characteristic is where the problem arises.

That's another argument, but that chant is deemed homophobic. There is gay undertones to it with it being about gay prostitutes. You can argue the toss with a few chants that have been deemed unacceptable these days, todays chant wasn't one of them

Lets be honest, calling a man a slag will make them smirk and some might even take it as a compliment.

For women its obviously different, insulting their lack of percieved innocence, honour and decency.
Worse if its someone's mother.
Maybe my perspective is based in the fact that I personally don’t see a woman being promiscuous as being any different (and thereby worse) than a man being promiscuous.
