The Chants Against Foden's Mum

An anthropologist once explained to me that this sort of chanting mainly emanates from the underclass, and the underclass are generally not well socialised - sad but true. If you’re looking at someone and wondering why they’re chanting about Foden’s mum, or Fergie touching kids, Munich etc they can’t actually help it, they don’t know how to be. Just be glad you don’t live next door to them!

Remember when the sticks and stones mantra held true. We were a lot less precious then. Pre the need to be liked and outraged in equal measure. Being offended is now a national pastime to wear with oh so indignant self-importance.
I find a dark humour in the depths of the chants and their formulation/adopption. Can't speak for Mrs Foden, but I'm sure she can look after herself.
Let's not get too Liverpool about words.

How fucking dare you!!

:-)

Master stroke from Pep protecting his player from criticism of what can only be described as a poor season.
I think Phil's scored six goals in the last seven Derby's.
Without Haaland he's obviously who they fear the most. Mind the gap SCUM.

A sizeable minority of drunken young boisterous fans are always going to sink as low as possible in seeking to wind up opposition players, it goes with the territory.

What is more annoying to me is that the authorities, bowing to pressure from whinging scousers, categorise some harmless chants as worthy of prosecution whereas something genuinely offensive like the Foden chant is happily ignored.

Even with the songs genuinely referencing tragic events, double standards are on show …. Flower of Scotland glorifies violent death but everyone blithely praises the “passionate Scots” when they belt it out yet Munich or Hillsborough songs are deemed beyond the pale. Ban everything offensive or nothing.

Racist chants are thankfully a thing of the past as they were hugely offensive and sometimes motivated by real hatred yet the conflating of all vaguely nasty chants into a one size fits all prosecutable offence is silly. Call me old fashioned but I can’t see how chanting “Chelsea rent boys” or “we can see you holding hands” are a similar category of hate crime

All that said however it’s really silly for City employees to acknowledge it. All today does is ensure that that particular chant will be sung the loudest next time Phil plays there.

And now the World Renowned Football Insider has claimed Phil wants to leave the Club!

Ultimately I’m not really arsed about the chants. They’re pretty crass, but that’s football and it makes little difference to me. It’s only really become a story because Guardiola was asked about it, and understandably went in to defend his player. Seen enough sanctimonious stuff written about our fans in the past that I’m glad he didn’t just swerve it though.

Nothing wrong with it in my eyes, crass but fair game as far as I'm concerned. We've sang much, much worse about other players. Neville family and posh spice is a slapper still get semi-regular renditions 20-30 years on. We haven't got a leg to stand on if we want to take the moral high ground and the attempt to sanitise everything is tedious bullshit.

Don’t forget this absolute classic.

I may or may not have had something to do with that...

There was a second verse too, Fergie touches kids, so does Ryan giggs.

Then we changed the tune to this one instead for a more soulful version

Fergie touches boys,
so does David moyes,
Fergie touches boys,
with David moyes, They're paedos.

Fergie touches kids,
so does Ryan giggs,
Fergie touches kids,
with Ryan giggs, they're paedos.

All these clips showing City fans chants are mostly on the concourse, big difference from today where it was sang in the ground by thousands and heard on tv apparently.

Saying that I wasn’t aware it was sang during the game on the stream I watched on.

Do you think the chants slandering his mother negatively impacted him today?

Sometimes, opposing fans shouting defamatory chants can fire a player's anger and lead them to play better.
But did today go a bit too far?

Pep makes a comment on it in his post-match press conference.

eh?.....been wank all season so a few chants today can't have put him off!.....im more concerned about our manager this season, i don't know a single blue who would've picked that team today....& worst thing is he rested most fer that piss poor performance.....scraping a draw against shite like that! Watched that first half & still didnt change anything at half time....mind blowing.

I get what your saying totally but it is a bit different saying a derogatory thing about your mum. It just seems to hit a nerve and be more personal.
Isn't that the aim of the chant? They've not said anything out of hand and if it gets Phil or even just fans rattled it's achieved it's aim

What does that matter? Can't say it's fine to sing it on the concourse but not in the stands. Is it fine for us to sing about munich as long as its restricted to the concourse?

The only difference is that they managed to actually get it going en masse, whereas getting many thousands of people to baselessly accuse somebody of paedophilia is a bit of a harder sell than calling somebody's mum a slag.

It's football, and the culture surrounding it that's been around for decades.

Bloody hell, we used to sing Charlie George walked like a woman and wore a bra, Ryan Giggs had aids and couldn't get rid of it, there are two Andy Gorams, Posh spice takes it up the arse, who's the faggot in the pink, I'd rather be a n..... than a scouse, and the list goes on.

I don't suppose for one second Phil could give a shit about a chant regarding his mother that is as far removed from reality as united are from being a top team.
