US Tariff War

They keep going on about 70 countries trying to negotiate a deal as some sort of evidence their strategy is working.

What do they expect countries will do?

I hope everyone who has business with USA now starts to look elsewhere in the world so as not to rely on them. That Levitt is there again and needs a good kick in the head, Art of the Deal-my arse.

As we've just reported, Donald Trump has raised tariffs against China to 125%, and also issued a 90 day pause to some tariffs.

Here's his Truth Social statement in full:

"Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately.

"At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping off the U.S.A., and other Countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable.

"Conversely, and based on the fact that more than 75 Countries have called Representatives of the United States, including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the USTR, to negotiate a solution to the subjects being discussed relative to Trade, Trade Barriers, Tariffs, Currency Manipulation, and Non Monetary Tariffs, and that these Countries have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape, or form against the United States, I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"

We are continuing to decipher the specifics of Trump's announcement, stick with us for the latest.

  • Donald Trump announces a 90-day pause on higher tariffs for dozens of countries, but hikes levies on China to 125%
  • Earlier this month the US president announced a "baseline" tariff of 10% on all countries, with higher rates for the "worst offenders"
  • He now says the higher rates will be paused for 90 days, and instead the "reciprocal tariff" will be 10%
  • But he says the rate for China will rise again, to 125%, because of "the lack of respect that China has shown to the world's markets"
  • Earlier on Wednesday, China announced an 84% tariff on US imports after Donald Trump imposed a 104% tariff on Chinese goods entering the US

Financial markets have soared after President Trump announced a 90-day "pause" on the tariffs against countries who have not retaliated against the US.

The NASDAQ index is up 9% and the S&P 500 index is up 8%.

I'm waiting for Trump to close down the SEC and hence remove any insider trading investigations.

90 day pause. Not sure on who (not China).

Everyone but China, it appears.

So he's still introduced a 10% tariff on the world.

I assume he's been told what the crazy numbers for e.g. Vietnam would do for the US manufacturers.

I did like the wording which suggests he was entirely separate from the introduction of the craziness: "I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE"

It's almost as though the whole thing hasn't been thought through properly ;)

Does Trump even realise that most American consumer goods companies are making their stuff outside the country?
That’s why I asked the other day what the long term plan is here from the USA. Surely they’re not this stupid? Is there something everyone’s missing that when someone tells us we all go ‘ohhhh, that’s why they’ve done it!’, or is it really then going ‘look at us, we’re the USA, we’re well ard!’?

BBC challenging a talking head (chairman of Great Hill Capital, not sure who they are) tried claiming what a Trump masterstroke it was that everyone is now relieved about only having 10% tariff.

Yeah, I'm sure the big cheeses in finance are totally fooled and happy about that 10%.
