FA Cup SF Draw | Nott'm Forest | Sun 27 April 16:30 | ITV1

March 1970, Wembley West Brom.

We left early my dad, his 2 mates, and 10 Yr old me. We got as far as the M56 before M6 junction when the car We were in broke down. They tried to fix it, but couldn't. They decided to give up organise a tow back to Blackley. I couldn't take it. I cried and sobbed like a baby. Finally my Dad said we would try and hitchhike, the two of us.
After standing on the hard shoulder of the Motorway for what seemed ages a car stopped and we were on our way.
I remember it was a big posh car, or was for us. We got as far as Luton, then we got another lift to Watford ( I think). From there an unpaid train to Wemley.
We won.
Now what my Dad had not said was that we were potless. We had to get a train to London, then another to Manchester and hid in the Mail van. At Piccadilly we just walked past the collectors.
I remember it all so clearly.

Hook or Crook get there if you ca n.
Love this!

Just checked and this has pissed me off even more,

The FA Cup Semi weekend falls on a normal weekend inbetween Bank Holiday weekends either side of it!

A Sunday 16:30 ko wouldn't be so bad with a Bank holiday Monday following it!

A word of warning for those that might want to use Chitern Railways next weekend.

Some of the Aylesbury to Marleybone line (via Amersham) is closed so if interested stay beyond Amersham. The main line is running but please read this from their website.

Sunday 27th April 2025:

An amended timetable will be in operation, in respect of the following:

  • Planned engineering works at multiple locations.
  • (HS2 viaduct works near Wendover and early morning routine maintenance at Oxford).
  • The London Marathon.
  • Wembley Stadium event - FA Cup Semi-Final #2 (Manchester City vs Nottingham Forest - 16.30 KO).
The railway is closed between Amersham and Aylesbury all day. No Chiltern Railways train services will operate between Marylebone and Aylesbury Vale Parkway (via Amersham). Rail replacement buses will operate as follows, connecting with London Underground Metropolitan Line services to/from Baker Street at Amersham.

  • Amersham - Great Missenden - Wendover - Stoke Mandeville - Aylesbury - Aylesbury Vale Parkway.
Additionally, the railway is closed between Oxford Parkway and Oxford until 08.20, affecting all early morning services to/from Oxford. During this period, rail replacement buses will operate between Oxford - Oxford Parkway and/or Oxford - Bicester North.

In respect of the London Marathon, the following additional early morning trains will operate to Marylebone:

  • 06.40 Banbury - Bicester North - Haddenham & Thame Parkway - High Wycombe - Beaconsfield - Gerrards Cross - Marylebone (07.55).
  • 06.56 Aylesbury - Princes Risborough - High Wycombe - Beaconsfield - Gerrards Cross - Denham - West Ruislip - Wembley Stadium - Marylebone (08.10).
In respect of the Wembley Stadium event, an enhanced timetable will be in operation for most of the day, with additional Wembley Stadium stops in trains, and also some additional trains.

Finalised timetables are uploaded into online journey planners 9 weeks before the date of operation. Please check your journey in the planner at the following link: https://buy.chilternrailways.co.uk/. Any journey checked outside of this timescale may be subject to change; please double-check how these amendments are due to affect your travel plans. For some engineering works and special events at Wembley Stadium, timetables may be released closer to the date of operation.

I was very young and my old man drove through Derby over the top to go to the M1. I threw up due to car sickness in Derby. At the match was on the side seats and remember big Mal with the cup and the state of the pitch.
