Clearly this isn’t a case of vandalism like the Hadrians Wall tree was, more a case of a disagreement between experts and environmentalists. The council, however, in my opinion, should have at the very least been notified prior to cutting it, to give the final seal - or not - of approval.

Other than native Americans , that tree had more history than the rest of your country
 
Reminds me of the time they needed to cut down sone tree to build the new Asda in Hulme.

A bunch of Swampy types tied themselves to it and there was a stand off for weeks.

Eventually the council agreed they wouldn’t cut it down and the protesters fucked off.

First night they were gone, they chopped the fucker down.
 
I thought all good tree surgeons check with the local authorities before starting work.
The ones I have use always check with the council.
We hired a tree surgeon to prune a tree back, all above board with the correct paperwork, tree office gave the OK. The tree surgeon started a day earlier and we got a right bollocking for that from the tree officer !
 
On a different note. Just heard about this piece of vandalism over the last few days. Heaven knows what they get from doing this.

'Mindless' vandals wreck heritage train carriages​

This is the East Lancashire Railway Trust (ERL) where window were smashed causing more than £5,000 worth in damage.
A section of a train with windows to a compartment smashed in. Glass can be seen on the floor while a man in work gear makes repairs.

Didn't Swampy did of heart failure...he refused a bypass
