A classic fa cup semi final of yesteryear .

What's noticeable is the wall of noise from the fans from start to finish ,there is no let up at all.

For Sunderland Dennis Tueart and Dave Watson do their bit ,whilst Billy Hughes ran his socks off with a brilliant swash buckling display up front which unsettles the experienced arsenal rearguard .Hughes was outstanding . Sunderland literally run 1st division arsenal into the ground
In goal Big Jim Montgomery is a safe pair of hands ,outshining arsenals Bob Wilson, who looks a good shot stopper, but not so brave as big Jim and often slow to react to through balls ..tbf he does get injured a couple of times

Arsenal have household names all over he pitch ,Charlie George and Ray Kennedy up front ,Alan Ball and George Graham in midfield

Very few of you will watch this to the end... ,but right at the death Arsenal,2-1 down are awarded a corner kick ,as they go to take it the referee blows for full time. The arsenal player about to take it looks astounded .... Is there a rule which says a corner must be allowed to be taken even if it's the last minute ?

Anyway the atmosphere att Hillsborough is electric...,no doubt helped by lashings of Courage Best and Watney Ale as pre match drinks ; )

Well, this is a 'right out of leftfield' thread.

It's a bit strange. It seems to be a very random game to start a thread about. Unless there's something that's happened recently between the two teams.
This is the general football thread ,and it's fa cup semi final week is it not .?
I found the match randomly and really enjoyed watching it ..is that so wrong Jim ??

If you can show me where I said it was wrong, please do. Fact is, I didn't. I said it was a random game to start a thread about. I'll accept the semi final link; that's fair enough

I found it funny watching the ref after Sunderland's 2nd goal...he gets caught up in the drama ,and appears to be celebrating the goal, and actually collides with the Sunderland goal scorer.....who is trying to celebrate the goal!
Its comical to watch, ref and goal scorer run into each other, bounce off each other and carry on as tho nothing had happened

The best thing about this game,is that it was actually played at a neutral ground. So the teams based in London actually have to journey up the M1 ,and not just play a semi-final in their own backyard.
And conversely, Sunderland fans have to go about half the distance it is to London, so in my eyes it makes it fairer to both sets of fans.

The greatest achievement in the history of the FA Cup. Stokoe took over Sunderland in late '72 when they were near the bottom of the old Division 2. Six months later they had beaten us, Arsenal and Leeds (probably 3 of the top five teams in the country at that time) on merit in each tie to lift the Cup.

Hence the reason why there is a statue of Bob outside the Stadium of Light , resplendent in his trilby and raincoat.

Great footage. How lucky were we to have had Dennis and Dave in our team.
Both club greats. I think in my time following City (since 1976) until the takeover, Dave Watson, along with Colin Bell are the only players that would comfortably get in our squad today.

Possibly Tueart too, who was my hero growing up.

I'm guessing that you may be a bit of a "glass half empty" kind of person?
Not at all, just emphasing the link between this famous footage and our own club.

And ,as another poster has pointed out, it really underlines the magnitude of Sunderland's achievement,in beating 3 of the country's top teams to win the fa cup..Leeds arsenal and City.
Could you imagine that happening now ?

There is ,imo, so much to take in from this partc match and watching two of the most popular City players in my lifetime reach the fa cup final is remarkable. Arsenal were no pushovers ,having recently won the double ...,

The early vintage goal scoring Peter Barnes ,and arguably Ass Hartford would, into comfortably get into our squad today ...

Im not so sure about Bell, he was injured Nov 1975 ,missed the remainder of 75.76 season and the whole of 76/77 season ....The Bell that returned after that ,1st at Highbury then in the 2nd comeback match v Newcastle boxing day 77 .... would ,arguably not have made our squad today ......due to the lasting effects of injury ..
I may be wrong .....
