Arsenal v'Sunderland FA cup semi final 1973

A classic fa cup semi final of yesteryear .

What's noticeable is the wall of noise from the fans from start to finish ,there is no let up at all.

For Sunderland Dennis Tueart and Dave Watson do their bit ,whilst Billy Hughes ran his socks off with a brilliant swash buckling display up front which unsettles the experienced arsenal rearguard .Hughes was outstanding . Sunderland literally run 1st division arsenal into the ground
In goal Big Jim Montgomery is a safe pair of hands ,outshining arsenals Bob Wilson, who looks a good shot stopper, but not so brave as big Jim and often slow to react to through balls ..tbf he does get injured a couple of times

Arsenal have household names all over he pitch ,Charlie George and Ray Kennedy up front ,Alan Ball and George Graham in midfield

Very few of you will watch this to the end... ,but right at the death Arsenal,2-1 down are awarded a corner kick ,as they go to take it the referee blows for full time. The arsenal player about to take it looks astounded .... Is there a rule which says a corner must be allowed to be taken even if it's the last minute ?

Anyway the atmosphere att Hillsborough is electric...,no doubt helped by lashings of Courage Best and Watney Ale as pre match drinks ; )

Clive Thomas did it in the World Cup Brazil got a last minute corner, player takes the corner and he immediately blows up before I think it had reached the penalty box, came across as a cnut did Thomas ..

Really enjoyed that - thanks for posting.
Crowd atmosphere in those days was unbelievable with the huge terraces. Wembley semi finals nowadays are pretty drab by comparison.

Yes mate, that's what I suppose I really wanted to convey, how the blood and thunder of fa cup semi finals then, and how it compares to today .Different gravy.
I came across it randomly and couldn't stop watching ,esp as Tueart and Watson were involved. However ...the player who really caught my eye was Billy Hughes.

I was only a kid in 1973..and had no concept of football, not coming from a football family background.,
I got into it in 76, then started collecting the football player cards,....that's why I have a good knowledge of 70s players....I always wondered who Billy Hughes was,was he any good ?

That match you could see how much a FA cup Semi final meant to an ordinary workaday striker ....he played his heart out.ran Arsenal ragged.,.and of course,..so much more was to come later...with " Porterfield ! one nil""in the Fa cup final v Leeds.

Alway s had deep admiration for Sunderland fans the way they show up and support their team, over the years.
Billy Hughes epitomised that energy in the match posted. They all did. For a second division team to beat mighty Arsenal, the recent double winners .,.....was big news.

Clive Thomas did it in the World Cup Brazil got a last minute corner, player takes the corner and he immediately blows up before I think it had reached the penalty box, came across as a cnut did Thomas ..
Yes mate ,thanks, thats why I raised the point, I think it was against Sweden ?
The thing is the two players(in the arsenal Sunderland match) at the death are dilly dallying about discussing who should take the kick.....
Always perplexes me why 2 players discuss whose taking a corner,...just get it done it's the last min u twat!

Was he quick enough?
One of the fittest (but not necessarily fastest ) players to have played the game. Massively underrated IMHO. Steady, read the game brilliantly and had a sweet left foot - imagine that, a left-footed left-back?!?
It’s the one position I don’t think we’ve ever truly got right post-takeover. I think Willie would have been brilliant in any Mancini / Pellegrini/ Pep team. And Kiddo would definitely have played him. Hughes wouldn’t have had a clue.

100% against Sweden and he blew just before it went in the net. Easy to say he was a **** but when it’s time, it’s time! Tueart at Derby v similar
