Snooker World Championship 2025

I was/am using world titles as a yardstick. And, having just checked, I'm happy to retract the claim about Steve Davies being better than O'Sullivan as, having just checked, Ronnie actually has one more world title than Steve. Which, I have to admit, surprised me. I thought Davies had a few more than the six he actually has. And Hendry is equal with Ronnie. It's just an impression I got that Hendry was mentally tougher than Ronnie. You obviously don't agree. Fair enough. We'll agree to differ.

As I said in my original post, it was my opinion, not a statement of fact.
Using World titles alone throws up some odd comparisons. Does that mean Graham Dott, Stuart Bingham & Luca Brecel for example are better than Jimmy White in his prime?

I think the Triple Crown, (World Champs, Masters & UK Championship) is a better yardstick - Ronnie has 23, Hendry 18, Davis 15, Higgins & Selby both on 9 & (in my opinion) that's the order I'd put those players in.

Selby vs Wollaston might be a very late finish!
From the BBC Sport live report:

Selby 5-6 Woollaston

Six of the 12 frames in this match have lasted longer than 30 minutes, including this one, with the average frame time close to 26 minutes.

I don't have the stats to hand but I would think that is the longest of any match in this year's first round.

Selby will probably get through but hope he gets beat tbh. His modus operandi these days is just to bore his opponents off the table. The fact that he's a really good player (you don't become multiple times world champion without being) just makes it worse. If I'd paid to watch a session and it turned out to be him then I wouldn't go.
If you’re under 50 be thankful you never had to watch the likes of Eddie Charlton - think he once dragged out and won a frame where he needed 6 snookers, probably due to his opponent giving up the will to live. He made Cliff Thorburn look like Jimmy White.

The Ebdon Dott world final was one of the most boring matches of all time, but some of the players in the 80s were so negative!

It has to be. The next frame was about 40 mins.

They’ve just said that the longest ever best of 19 match was between Eddie Charlton and Cliff Thorburn.

10 hours 20 mins.

Selby had a little tantrum at the end of the frame too.

This Selby vs Woollaston game is horrendous, looks like neither knows how to win.

Thorburn vs Griffiths, is like Higgins vs White in comparison to this.

So intense though. Fair play to Wollaston.

Selby just couldn’t build breaks.
Pressure does crazy things, you can understand Woollaston struggling with the pressure but Selby shouldn't, and just played awful really, he looked completely out of form.

Made a decent break to get it back to 9-8 and I thought he'll win this now but he continued as he'd been playing before. Think apart from that break his highest break was 38 all evening, which sum's up his performance.

Tip problems tbf to him.
But he will use these crap Elks!
So many better tips available these days that play good straight away, unlike elks and blue diamonds!!

Just shows how much snooker is a mentally challenging game.

Who are we fancying to win it?

Trump looked good and he's favourite

O'Sullivan had a good second day but you never know what version will turn up. Even when he played well the other day, his long potting was still miles off. You won't get away with that deep into the tournament.

I'm always impressed with Zhao Xintong. Wouldn't surprise me if he was the first Chinese player to lift the trophy. I put him and Trump as my two favourites.

Murphy looks good. Can’t stand him but can’t deny his talent.

Yeah, it would be some achievement winning it for the second time 20 years after the first.

I thought Brecel looked really good at times yesterday but just nowhere near as consistent as when he won it. He's very talented though.

I love watching Brecel, such an exciting shot maker. You’re right about the lack of consistency.
Murphy has changed his game somewhat after a fallow period.
