The Squad planning thread

Agreed! £80m for Wharton or MGW is only one winner
Agree but they are completely different types of player

Wharton is a deep lying playmaker , would be amazing in a double pivot next to Rodri , but I think we need someone higher up the pitch with KDB going

It’s a conundrum with how they are going to piece the squad together with the need for homegrown signings or releasing more foreign players

Nico could push on? Or even Wharton can play in tight spaces?
Possibly never seen them try. However I just think even if we play a midfield 4 like we are now, picking from Rodri, Gonzalez, O’’Reilly, Foden, probably Gundogan and or Kovacic, maybe Wirtz or similar. Then Wharton isn’t different enough for me,and we might even go back to a midfield 3 who knows, Gibbs White could be ,that said I haven’t really seen any solid links to Gibbs White,Wharton or any other home grown midfielders really.
We really could bring in just about anyone, Cambiaso and Costa seems the only ones with strong possibilities.

Personally think one CM will drop to split CBs, A 433 into a 235/325. (LB/LW swapped depending on the combinations etc)

LW ST RW
CM DM AM
LB CB CB RB

into

LB LW ST RW LB
CM AM
CB DM CB

Pure guess work on my part though, who knows with this mad baldy.

I did think that until maybe aw eek or so ago. However this current 4222 with wide fullbacks has given me second thoughts. With Doku and Savinho our only wide attackers and for now better impact subs, we may well stick to it. Names may be different just guessing a few names but something like

Costa
Porro. Dias. Gvardiol. . Cambiaso
Rodri. Gonzalez
Wirtz. Foden
Marmoush. Haaland

Or I could be completely wrong )

Cant see it working with Haaland really. He doesnt drop to make the spaces needed to drag/confuse CBs, he'll always be central. Sure, pep might have a tweak in mind though but gut feeling is Foden and Omar in free roles wide to get as close to him in the box as possible with AMs/FBs pulling wide. Should be fun though

With Haaland, he likely just moves slightly right as Marmoush inverts.

Then the RW moves inside with the CAM, remaking 4222 to work with Haaland.

i think Bobb will be loaned out. He has missed a year and needs to get a match experience
but 3 atb would be the best formation for next year if we get Frimpong and Wirtz

i doubt we will get Camavinga, he would be excellent signing tho, probably the next best thing who can do similar stuff is Baleba
Camavinga is what makes it FIFA. I irrationally want him, but know there's basically zero chance

I concur. If Pep wants his fullbacks to pin back opposition wingers and have 4 players in the midfield to stop teams from countering us means we need more PnP players. Flying fullbacks with pace and physically gifted midfielders. Vanderson and (Theo/Kerkez) for fullbacks and Reinjders Rodri as the physical midfielders and (Wirtz/Cherki) and Foden as the 10s. I’m surprised nobody’s talking about how we can’t play our old systems simply because Marmoush shouldn’t be benched.

Diogo Costa £50m
Ortega
Carson

J.Frimpong £35m
Khusanov
Dias
Stones
Reis (Loan?)
Akanji
Gvardiol
Ake
O'Reilly
Aït-Nouri £10-15m (1 year left on contract)

Rodri
Foden
N.Gonzalez
Lewis
Wirtz £100m
Kovacic
Echeverri
Gundogan
Mukasa (Promote first team)
Reijnders £50m or MGW £50-60m
Savinho

Haaland
Doku
Marmoush
N.Williams £50m

Sell: Grealish £40m, McAtee £35m, K.Phillips £15m, Ederson £30m, Walker £5m, Nunes £30m, Bernardo Silva £20m, De Bruyne (Released)

Approx £120-130m net spend - slightly unrealistic but over 2 windows doable. Massive load off the wage bill some top servants out the door but time for a new chapter I think now.

From the noises coming out from the club its looking more and more like we are in a 1 in 1 out situation with transfers

Plus we have to balance the 17 foreigners of which we have 1 too many at the moment if we assume Reis will be registered for the CL next season

I think definitely gone are KDB & Walker

With Grealish and Ederson being probables

I think this is why MGW makes sense for the club being a homegrown player to replace Grealish

Diogo Costa will replace Ederson like for like

It then gets tricky on who replaces KDB and Walker , if we go for Wirtz & Cambiaso then we are two over the foreigner cap

Which would mean two current foreign lads leaving - could be Stefan ? Bernardo ?

Why spend +50m to replace a bench player ?

95% of Jack's game were as a LW , MGW is not

The middle already filled with ( Rodri, Nico Gonzalez, Foden, Gundogan , Kovacic, Bernardo, Foden, Mcatte ) while we only needs 3 out of those 9 to start.

Not to mention Rico & possibly O'Reilly to fill in there.

We’d be better next season if Bernardo and Gundogan leave and McAtee goes out on loan or leaves and we buy at least one, preferably two midfielders to replace them. Wirtz and maybe Wharton.

Either that or buy a proper left back and play O’Reilly in his preferred position of midfield instead of our ageing legends who really need to go after this season. Premier league is all about power and pace these days.

You are right about the older players but it isn't all about pace and power and liverpool are far less about pace and power than they were under Klopp. Peps football with the right younger energetic players will still be the football to beat.

For all the squad planning, out of the players brought last 2 seasons, only 2 are shoe in’s in our first 11.

Not saying others are not, but ATM you would expect Gvardiol and Mahmoush to be playing.

Doku, Nunues, Kov, Gundogan, Sylvino etc can and cannot.

I think we need as a bare minimum, 2 of the in the first 11 type players.

One at RB and one in CM.

I do wonder if we are trying to keep our business under wraps while we are still aiming for a champions league spot and have the cup final on the horizon.

Considering all we know KDB is leaving and Gundogan has triggered an extension, there’s an awful lot up in the air.

In the last few weeks there’s been conflicting reports on Bernardo’s future. Kovacic has been suggested as a departure as has Nunes but both have made big contributions recently. Grealish looks but to be off but started in the semi final. Where do Stones age Ake fit based on Pep’s comments on players being available?

On incomings I think we’ll be casting our net far and wide with multiple options for each position. So we might see similar situations to 2015 when we were linked with both KDB and Firmino but KDB was the preferred option. So some of the players linked may well be on our list but not the first option.

Bit of a sam Lee drop this morning, says City want 4-5 players but want to lower the wage bill. Not sure that should be the priority after a drop off tbh. I get not wanting to bring anyone in on what Kev was on straight away, but again it reeks of our new net spend ethos that directly contributed to diminishing returns with transfers.

The priority is to bring in young, hungry and talented players which have the bonus of being on less money.

Replacing the likes of Kev, Stones, Grealish, Bernardo, Gundogan and so forth who are seemingly at the end of their time here is going to be the task for Viana.
The combined wages for those more than pay for the likes of Wirtz and Reijnders for example, we wouldn't be worse off with those two would we.
