Seeing Arsenal stumble tonight gives you the full measure of exactly what we did two years ago. Yes, Arsenal have despatched Real handsomely, and they may yet turn it round against P.S.G., although they'll have a hell of a job. Something tells me this is finally P.S.G.'s year. Both the F.A. Cup and the league were done and dusted long ago as far as Arsenal have been concerned..
We dealt with a still good Dortmund, despatched Bayern Munich without too much fuss, put Real completely to the sword, and then edged past a good Inter Milan (don't underestimate their chances of winning the trophy this year, either). All this, while we fended off Arsenal themselves, despatching them in a magnificent double performance between Kev and Erling. And keeping the F.A. Cup on the boil to finally win it against the rags (who were awarded an absurd penalty so as to keep it alive for the watching millions).
What we did was far more difficult and conclusive than what United achieved in ’99.
Yet more astonishing — there was no after-the-party hangover. The team still had it in them to win the league again, get to the final of the F.A. Cup (where they finally ran out of gas), and outplay Real Madrid over the two legs, and somehow just let it slip away from them. Astounding. We should actually be getting relegated this season, frankly — after that eight-year effort.
