Southampton (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

We won the league fighting it out against a liverpool side who had downed tool and serial bottlers in Arsenal, truth be told the football at times was absolutely shite, as it has been this season.

Not true Liverpool were actually leading the table at one point and looked favourites, then Arsenal had a decent lead over ourselves. We relentlessly ground them down as we often have done over the years. We only lost on penalties to Madrid after being the better side in both legs. The only game we underperformed was the fa cup final against the rags.
A lot of our games can be a struggle as we face what we did against Southampton yesterday on a regular basis. There were signs last season though that this squad had reached it's absolute limit and needed a refresh. Pep in his wisdom thought he'd get another season out of it but he was sadly wrong. We then got battered by injuries, Rodri being the worst one of course, leading to the season we've had.
Yesterday Pep wanted to give Haaland and Akanji minutes before the cup final, but he made too many other changes too. You can't blame him for thinking against a shit Southampton side we'd have enough to get the job done but we didn't. Even at our absolute peak we often had a blip like yesterday. Southampton have often proved difficult opponents for us and they put a superhuman effort in yesterday to salvage some pride and not go down as the worst side in premier league history to date.

Sensible comments……

"I mean I remember the same things being said when liverpool last won the league and people wondered if we'd be back winning again etc. We then won 4 in a row."

We won 4 in a row because we lost to Madrid, and for me the only reason we won the title.

We were well of it last season to, the warning signs were there, slow ponderous possession and often relying on a moment of individual brilliance to win a game.

This decline started the moment we won the treble and again down to arrogance, several of that side were in decline, KDB, Walker and Bernardo for starters.

The decision to not give a new 2 year deal to Gundo I understood but why 12 months later take him back and give him the very same deal at one year older and clearly a shadow of the player he was.

Julian Alvarez, 20 goals and numerous assists, the player that played out of his skin early season that allowed us to win the 4 in a row, sold for 80 M and never replaced, again for me criminal arrogance from the club.
Mahrez too

Let’s be honest, most of our set pieces lack ideas. For instance, the free kick just outside the box from yesterday’s match. We had KDB and Foden stood over the ball. Foden ran up to the ball and side stepped for KDB to take the shot. All done in what seemed slow motion and no creativity.
The best corner taker we have now is Marmoush. He’s probably the best right footed free kick taker. But still, there’s no creativity from any dead ball situation and that needs sorting.

Perhaps we could learn from the ladies

We need to win the next 3 games end of story, not rocket science.

Win a cup and qualify for the CL, then get management and execs in a room and ask some very serious questions, otherwise this could get worse.
yeah ,fair enough ,but qualification for cl is a must.

There was nothing superhuman about Southampton yesterday ,we just were not good enough and Pep thought passing the ball around with 7 midfielders will be enough to win.

I didn't say they were superhuman I said they put a superhuman shift in and they did. Somehow they got away with it.

Why did we spend so much on new players in January then? When they first came they gave us much needed new legs all over the pitch, and that changed our fortunes. But they have been dropped one by one, until none started yesterday. And now it feels like we are back to square one!

I have a bad feeling about next season already.

Nothing will change unless we invest in some top proven talent.

Buying ageing journey men in the likes of Kovacic, won't help and also young unproven individuals like Savinho and Doku will add to the frustration.

A tweak in tactics for some games would go amiss as well. We make it hard for ourselves with this possession at all costs football. We inch up the pitch giving time for the opponent to get 10 men behind the ball, then wonder why we find it hard to cut through them.

If you are correct and he's yesterday's man(I disagree). Who do we replace him with? All the top coaches out there are at top clubs and unlikely to leave. It'll be easy to sack him, let him resign, finding a replacement a lot more difficult.

As for staying for the money, pure speculative BS.

That's football. Players are offloaded when they've passed their best and replacements are brought in. Some work out, some don't.

Why not coaches? I'd rather City take a punt on a coach like Thomas Frank or Roberto De Zerbi than watch another season of Pep's increasingly boring risk averse recycling possession rut that he can't seem to get out of. He got £20m+ for a season of dross this year.

It's lazy to say 'but who do we replace him with?' If your bread goes stale you go to the shop and buy a fresh loaf. It's time for the City Group to get off their complacent arses and make some decisions about the football side of business other than squeezing money out of fans.

Yea I thought the new signings were OK. The new CM gave us our old system back.
I know it takes time to learn Peps ways but as you say we are back to KDB, Gundo and Bernie.
