Referees’ Performances | 2024/2025

Attwell’s performance back in 2008 at Vicarage Road where he gave a goal that only struck the front of the crossbar and bounced out - and then followed that up with a very dodgy pen late on to ensure a draw in the game smacked not of incompetence but, of sheer unmitigated corruption - he’d clearly taken a bung - probably from a betting syndicate. There’s no way he was that incompetent. The question needs to be asked - why is this man still refereeing at the highest level when controversy (disguised as mistakes and incompetence) continue to follow him around.

Wasn't it Attwell who awarded a goal for the ball going in through the side netting. I think he was just out of the sixthform and PiGMOL, or whoever it was, wanted to fast track new vibrant personnel into the game. He's never been better than 24ct shite. Should have been pensioned off after that side netting debacle.

He’s said it’s not his business you should know he won’t comment in public on the officials it’s only likely to get him in trouble
Yeah, call out incompetence for what it is and you bring the game into disrepute! Our national game is the worst for governance and arbitration. Every time I watch a game of rugby. league or union, and I wonder why we don't have that level of video assistance.

This won’t happen but the club should be asking, for transparency sake, the full unedited comms between all the officials from the moment the ball was played over the top until they say check complete. It’s an utter shambles of a decision, probably worse than the Rashford offside that wasn’t given in the derby. If only I could remember who the ref was that day…

Both of those games have transparency and accountability. Two things sadly absent in English football.

The bin dippers got to hear a dodgy decision. Why shouldn’t we?!

When a forward goes around the keeper to score, how often does he take the ball away from the goal before scoring. Such a poor excuse to say haaland was moving away from the goal. I've said it before but we only need var because the referees are so bad. Or are cheats, which we can't rule out. So to give them the job of var and expect them to be any better is not going to happen. City need to be more vocal about these bad decisions, keeping quiet is not helping the cause.

I don’t get the spin they tried to put on it about the direction of the ball and where it was going. If the keeper intentionally handles the ball outside of the penalty area it is a red card. Putting your hand up in a 50/50 shows intention, his hand isn’t there by accident.

Haaland did it v Chelsea

It's not even correct to claim that Haaland or the ball was moving "away" from the goal. Haaland and the ball were moving towards the goal but not along the shortest path. They might have been going wider but the distance towards the goal was getting shorter. Rarely does anybody move directly towards goal along the shortest path.

And the ball moved because Henderson touched it.

Old Trafford 15 Jan 2023
From an offside position Rashford ran with the ball for thirty yards shielding it but not touching it
Referee decided that he did not interfere with play

Wembley 17 May 2025
Henderson handles the ball outside of his area playing the ball away from Erling
The officials decided it was not a DOGSO so no action was taken

The vast majority including pundits commentators and opposition fans deemed both decisions to be wrong and even some of the worse decisions they had seen

Both decisions went against Manchester City

On both occasions the referee involved was Stuart Atwell
On both decisions Darren McCann was involved as either as linesman or Deputy VARIMG_1083.jpeg
