General Videogame Thread

Coming to the end of my second run through of Expedition. It's definitely top 2 of my favourite ever games. Run through number 3 I'll 100% it. Suggested it to the Mrs last week. Caught her playing it at 6am yesterday morning. Absolutely smashed it

Slowly working my way up the stakes in balatro with the aim of getting the competitionist++ for winning gold stakes on every deck and having a gold sticker for all 150 jokers.

I had heard the black deck was the hardest to win on at higher stakes so thought I'd start going up the stakes on that deck, hit black deck and it became really tough.

the one less hand is manageable if you have luck on your side but with just 2 discards carrying over from lower stakes it makes consistently finding playable hands above a pair really difficult which means you have to concentrate on deck shaping really early and that will cripple your economy so you'll never even have the chance to take advantage of the extra joker slot you get with this deck until later ante's anyway if all goes well And if you are in that position, youve probably got a winning deck already. after numerous failed runs even reaching the ante 8 boss multiple times I finally managed it. From there I somehow breezed orange and gold stake first try.

I've now got a gold stakes win on the black deck, chequered deck and analglyph deck

More balatro.

Done all 20 challenges including the infamous jokerless challenge which was not easy.

also got a gold stakes win with the painted deck which seems to be widely regarded as the second most difficult after black deck. with the two hardest done, In theory, it only gets easier from here now.

That C++ is still quite far away but the most difficult bits are now done and I'm 7/15 gold stake wins in. Starting to see cards in my sleep now.

Could do with some advice. Bought a PS5 slim disc edition for my daughter's birthday next week, refurbished off eBay from Currys clearance. Seemed a bargain, £275.

I tested a game on it when it arrived, you know for scientific purposes but also to make sure it wasn't faulty, and an hour into it the PS5 froze. A soft reset fixed the issue, but it's since frozen again 6 times over the weekend playing different disc based games. I've tried everything short of a full reset and OS install, which I'm pondering, but the issue persists. It will freeze in in game at any time from ten minutes in to two hours in, and each time a soft rests fixes it and you can go on gaming again for another while.

My problem is this. I know I should return it as faulty, but I also know I got a very good price and won't be able to find another one for a similar price in time for her birthday next week.

Any suggestions, what would you do? I've cleaned it checked the air flow, even bought an additional fan unit, checked multiple games, cleared the cache and rebuilt the database each a couple of times.

I guess it's inevitable it's going back but gutted that I've fooked up her present and left myself with little time to do anything about it.

Definitely take it back mate. A brand new ps5 right out the box can freeze and require a database rebuild but if it's happening consistently, it's a faulty product. for what you'd have to pay to get that looked at and potentially find a fix, you'd end up paying full whack anyway. Sounds like it's that price because it's essentially a box if spare parts.

Shame about the birthday present aspect but is it worth paying £275 for what will likely be a brick very soon?

The annual "days of play" sale is due to begin this week, I believe it might even start tomorrow, there's usually a small but not insignficant discount offered on consoles during that sale amongst other things so hang on a day or two and see what that sale offers.

Cheers. I know it's the right thing to do, just well annoyed that the refurb process isn't as thorough as I'd hoped.

It has a 12 month warranty bit, as you say, I'm probably better returning it within 14 days and finding something else.

Anyone on here play World of Warships?

Just as I predicted, sony have just announced their days of play sale starting tomorrow, ps5's will be discounted during it so check their website tomorrow.

You may have just saved my bacon mate, cheers for the heads-up! Original console is shortly back on it's way to Currys for them to figure out what to do with it, and I'll just have to stomach the full price of a new console so this sale comes at the right time to make it at least a possibility. Looking at past events it's been around 15-20% off RRP, so here's hoping!

Getting flashbacks to the old PS3 YLOD and 360 RROD now, can be doing without that!

No worries. No specific details yet, you'll have to check tomorrow It just says prices start from £339 but I'm guessing they're the sony refurbished ones.

You usually get £50-80 knocked off and maybe some random freebie thrown in. I got mine in one of these past sales, I got I think £50 knocked off the price but I also got a years free sub to Netflix premium worth about £215. I was already paying for Netflix standard anyway and so managed to add the £215 credit to my existing account and stretch that to basically 2 years free Netflix and that made it a no brainer purchase.

with inflation and console prices going up, they're unlikely to be that generous this time around but it's still usually the best offer of the year.

Snagged a brand new PS5 slim disc edition for my daughter at £362 which I think is the best I could do, via The Game Collection who have been really good at sending games quickly in the past. Birthday saved, hopefully!

It's more than I payed for the refurbished one off Currys last week, but if it works without issues then it's worthwhile.

As for me I'm happy with my laptop. Delving back into XCOM 2 for a bit of tactical turn based nonsense :)
