I wouldn't take it as gospel though, just a rough guide.

The best way is to go with the age grading based on the world record for that age group. Runners World have a calculator for anyone running, although most do parkrun and have this calculated for them.

Their definitions are:
  • 100% = world record
  • 90% = world class
  • 80% = national class
  • 70% = regional class
  • 60% = local class
 
On week 1 Run 2 of Coach to 5K, haven’t done any running for over 50 years, I’m 71……

Fantastic, good luck mate, that's where I started aged 58 5 year's ago. Hadn't ran for 40 years. Rest day are very important at this stage, don't be scared to redo a day or go back a step it's all about end goal. Keep us updated on your progress

Just curious have you ran the Lakeland’s marathon around Coniston? It’s the 7th June this year so thinking I might give it a go. Heard it’s very tough, incredible views, but as I’m a bit undercooked currently not yet convinced myself to book it.

Ive done the Lakeland trail half,really nice route obviously hilly.Liked the bit near Tarn Howes ?

I'm in a similar boat to you mate. I'd very much like to do it but not quite ready in time. Perhaps aim for it next year? Meet you there. If you're marathon fit, perhaps just go for it this year?

Similarly with my local marathon The Solway Coast - it goes past my front door but it's also in June and I would need another few weeks to be marathon fit.

Are you looking at any other events for this year?

The main challenge that I'm thinking about over the coming couple of months or so is running Hadrian's Wall. I live on the route (my house is allegedly built from stones taken from the wall) so I'm looking at doing it in stages.

Yes Tarns howes is lovely. Only found out about it from a dog walking book but it’s one of our favourites now.

Looking at the race info I think the half is pretty tough with plenty of ascent but the views were worth the effort?

Yes ideally I need an extra 4 weeks of training. I did run 20 miles this weekend but it was on the flat trails which is obviously different to the Lakeland marathon.

Sadly I live in in the deepest south so won’t get many other opportunities this year to race a marathon in the Lakes, so I might have to swallow my ego and run/walk it and forget about times and position. If I don’t do the marathon I will book the half instead as me and the missus have booked accommodation for 7 nights just outside Keswick. Be great to see you there.

Only other challenge pencilled in is the ‘Fan Dance’ in September. It’s an SAS fitness test for recruits wanting to join.

They run with weighted packs but me and a mate are intending to do it without the weighted pack but just challenge ourselves to get a decent time.

I have watched a few videos on the Ultra which runs adjacent to Hadrians wall and finishes in Newcastle. Looks absolutely stunning but I think the first half is a really challenging.

All sounds great. This chat has really given me an appetite for taking part in some events. I've been out of it for a while; I think it's at least 2 years since I've taken part in any kind of event so would like to do something (in addition to the GNR) this year - perhaps in the autumn when I've had the summer to get fit.

So are you in Keswick next week when the Lakeland events are on?
 
Well spotted! You might know that my youngest daughter is an oncology patient - she was gifted a break there by Children's Cancer North, which was very nice.

I actually missed your posts about your daughters health, must be a tough time for you all. That's a lovely thing to receive from the charity and I hope you all had a great time.

Ran ok (26:48) despite being diagnosed with Varicocele. So my balls hurt a bit running.
Glad you put that last sentence in otherwise wouldn’t have known what that was. Esp in those circumstances a run in the 26s a good effort mate.

Only another 21 runs and your next t-shirt on the horizon :-)

Delamere Forest rammed this morning so unless you were on the front row, very little chance of a quick time.

So I came in from this morning's run with a tick sticking out of my leg. I'm not a fan, I must say.

The thing is, I'd been wearing full-length, tight-fitting trackie bottoms so the little bugger had crawled under the bottom of the leg and then crawled up!
