Something Special about Stockport?

The market and underbank is a good place to eat and drink nowadays, around Chestergate and Mersey Square needs attention. On the whole it's improved a lot recently and like town it seems to be bucking the trend of town and city centres turning into desolate shit holes.

Palmer is from wythenshawe, Mainoo is shit (The coveraged he gets because he pplays for utd makes him appear like a world beater that should play for England... United players aae not world beaters they are wife beaters.

Stockport.... Pah! Wythenshawe is where its at. Rashford, Palmer, Tyson Fury, Sad Cafe.

Paul Stewart.

Slaughter and the Dogs.

So you're not in favour of it?
Well I just find it odd in the sense that, and I may be mistaken on this but
1) I thought there was a binding agreement since since the viaduct was first built that every train to Manchester had to stop at Stockport railway station, so there are many many trains every day,
2) the infamous 192 bus service is really, really frequent every day,
3) a tram on it is likely to slow the road itself further

As such, when it comes to funding decisions about where to spend money on transport improvements in Greater Manchester I’m really surprised that this is where they’ve decided to splash the dosh.

Nowt wrong with Stockport. Still miles prefer to do my socialising in MCR but there are one in two decent pubs in the town centre. My favourite of which would be the Magnet which is just up the hill from what's probably the worst (although now shut down) The George.

Not a huge fan of the market area. It nice enough to look at but a tad overrated from a night out perspective in my opinion but Bakers Vault abf The Boars Head are decent enough. The produce hall is a bit wank in my opinion.

Some really nice areas to live too. Cheadle Hulme, Poynton, Bramhall, Marple, Romiley that all have enough decent restaurants and bars that are probably better than what the town centre has to offer.

Much rather live in Stockport than other towns on the outskirts of Manchester.
Absolutely this.

I moved from living in Stretford/Chorlton my entire life to Stockport just after covid. I've bought my forever home, got far more for my money and much prefer the options to socialise.

In addition to that I am a ten minute walk away from feeling like I'm out in the sticks and a ten minute taxi from all of those areas you listed (Marple only 5). The best of all worlds for me and my family and the best decision we ever made.

I am originally from Stockport and a pretty lady Consultant once assured me I was nothing special when explaining my illness to me. It was the nicest compliment I have ever had from a woman. Does that qualify in the fact the word special was used.

Growing up in Hazel Grove, Stockport used to be the Big Smoke for us. Actually, I suspect it was much more depressed then than it is now. Huge unused warehouses. Seems to have reinvented itself a bit.
Oh, Owen Jones comes from Stockport. Which I'm afraid is a strike against it, as far as I'm concerned.

Don't think the plan is to put the tram on the A6 if that's what you mean. I believe they want to extend the route from East Didsbury into the Stockport Interchange partly using some existing tracks.

Didn’t appreciate that, cheers. Won’t it make it a roundabout way into Manchester though, compared to train or 192 ?

I agree, I prefer living in Stockport over Manchester or the other surrounding towns.

Loads of good pubs, right near the countryside (derbyshire/ Cheshire) and it think it’s kept a strong identity. Manchester to me is either really gentrified or really run down, depending on where you are.

Not sure I’d count poynton as Stockport though.

Yeah, if it is done like that, it won’t make travelling to Manchester any easier, but will provide a decent link for people wanting to go to Didsbury, Chorlton etc. Also gives people more transport options from Wythenshaw area if they change at St Werburgh’s Road and head towards Stockport.

There’s some info online about some of the options, although would still require some significant work to get the tram from East Didsbury into Stockport. Possibly some stops created in Heaton Mersey, Cheadle Heath depending on route.

Probably similar to the airport line. I doubt anyone, apart from maybe tourists who don’t know what they’re doing, gets the tram all the way from the airport to town. When they can jump on a train on the next platform and do it in a fraction of the time.

But it’s handy for people in various parts of Wythenshawe coming into town and going to Civic or the airport itself.
